AS the community waits in anticipation for next week’s Christmas lights switch-on, volunteers have been busy preparing the town for the annual spectacular event. To help spur the team on, Christmas lights volunteer, Peter Reynolds, has written a special prayer.
O Lord, a small favour is all we ask,
Your help is needed to aid our task.
To brighten this Christmas around our nice town,
And bring a smile and not a frown.
We’re just a small band of volunteers,
Who are aged and getting on in years.
But cheerfully we go about our task,
Please watch over us, is all we ask.
Give added strength to our knees and thighs,
As ladders we climb towards the skies.
Help us quell our fears and trepidation,
Lest the climb be a cure for old age constipation.
Aid us remember that when wires we fit,
That electricity can pack quite a painful hit.
To stop us “glowing” on the spot,
Aid us remember RED is hot and BLUE is not.
Strengthen us, when, without a frown,
To lamp-posts in places around the town.
We hang Motifs with many a light,
So they sparkle and glitter throughout the night.
These we must fix with clamps or nuts,
There just cannot be any “ifs” or “buts”.
Help us remember to get it right,
And that LEFT is loose and RIGHT is tight.
Bless also, the people of this town,
Who thank us with smiles and never a frown.
Bless the shops and business folk,
Who bring us hot drinks, with a laugh and a joke.
Bless also, those who use motor power,
Who sit patient and quiet without a glower.
’Cos when across the roads, light strings we secure,
That traffic must not move ‘til we’re all quite sure.
But Lastly O Lord, I know you’ll remember,
Our lights go on at the start of December.
So if you could, I know it’s a strain,
Please, Please, Please don’t let it rain.
