Melksham Community Response Weekly Round-up

Weekly Round-up 5th April -12th April

We have collected and delivered 71 prescriptions in and around Melksham.

We have shopped for and delivered essential items to 61 households.

We answered 209 phonecalls on our dedicated support line.

48 wonderful new volunteers joined our team.

We walked peoples dogs 18 times who would not haveĀ been exercised

We opened 91 new cases where we provided support to residents

Over the last 4 weeks we have supported a total of 857 calls, made 179 shopping trips, delivered 206 prescriptions and recruited 399 volunteers.

We wanted to to start with a massive thank you!

At our team meeting at the end of last week (well when we were are speaking into our computers hoping that we were seen and heard by everyone else somewhere down the line)Ā we were reflecting on just what has been achieved in the first three weeks of lockdown.

None of us could have imagined a couple of months ago even the possibility of needing to run a service like this, let alone actually have got such a system up and running and working effectively and efficiently so quickly.

So, as I write this week’s newsletter, I want to not only say a huge thank you again to all of the amazing volunteers who are doing so much to help residents across the Melksham Community, but I also wanted to thank the epic team from Melksham Town Council and Melksham Without Parish Council who are staffing the phones and dealing with all of incoming queries, requests and offers of help.

None of them signed on for this, and for some I suspect it has been quite a journey going from their normal day jobs to, effectively, running a call centre.

The professionalism, the commitment and the dedication from every single member of the team has been apparent from day one, and weĀ are so grateful to them for all that have put in so far to make this all happen.

If you speak or message them at all over the next few days, do me a favour and say thank you and well done to them – believe me they really do deserve it!

Important Reminder

It is important that we all remember to follow the Government guidance to stay safe during this crisis.
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-how-to-help-safely–2/coronavirus-how-to-help-safelyAgain
If you think you, or anyone in your household, have any of the symptons of Covid-10 (Coronavirus) it is ESSENTIAL that you stop any volunteering and go into self-isolation as outline in the guidance above.
We are asking not only to protect and help you, but the majority of the people we are helping are critically at risk from the virus and must be protected.

Wow, can you people deliver!

My goodness, this week you all really stepped up to the mark when we asked for help with delivering some additional leaflets informing people about the support available.

Between you all, over 4,500 leaflets were delivered in 24 hours!

Thank you to every who helped us deliver this important message.

Are you doing a regular shop for someone?

Many of our volunteers have agreed to do regular shops for the people they are helping, for which we say a massive thank you!

However, if you do a shop for someone referred to you by the Response Hub, please remember to let us know so that we can keep our records up to date and will be able to confirm to the police you are volunteering for the hub if asked.

Can you help brighten people’s day?

Our Facebook page showing off some of the spectacular Window Rainbows across Melksham has proven to be really popular.

Can you help brighten the days of residents in the community area who can’t get out to see them all? Just take a photo of the displays in your house, and/or encourage you friends, neighbours and family to do the same – from a socially acceptable distance of course!

Melksham Community Response is a joint project being run and funded by the Melksham Area Board, Melksham Town Council, Melksham Without Parish Council and Age Friendly Melksham. We are incredibly grateful to the teams from Melksham Town Council and Melksham Without Parish Council who are working non-stop to keep the system functioning.

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis

One’s scandal to another’s philanthropy

In the last issue, I mentioned a bequest made in the will of Mrs Ludlow Bruges that enabled the purchase of land and construction of a state-of-the-art hospital on Spa Road.

These funds came primarily through US stocks, investments and interest totalling around £198,000; today worth around £17.3M.

Although delighted, people were confused by her generosity. She’d moved to the Channel Islands from Seend and had never had any known links to Melksham Cottage Hospital nor any other Melksham charities. If you were to refer to the plaque pictured in the last issue, you would note a contribution of Ā£100 in 1923 by Mr W Bruges. This was a bequest by William Bruges of Semington with no close tie to the Ludlow Bruges of Seend.

Perhaps her contribution may have had something to do with a notorious scandal in 1881. The hospital benefactor in question, Lisette Henrietta (Hamilton) Ludlow Bruges, was the wife of Richard Ludlow Bruges, Magistrate and Justice of the Peace. He was charged with writing, sending and publishing false, scandalous and defamatory libel about Lady Constance Gladys (Herbert), Countess of Lonsdale.

  • Village centre celebrates opening of new kitchen

A local centre has upgraded its kitchen to professional catering standard following a £15,000 grant from Wiltshire Council.

Seend Centre held a small ceremony last month with villagers and members of the centre’s committee. The chair of the parish council, Debbie Savage, cut the ribbon and declared the kitchen officially open.

Chair of the committee, Karen Cubberley, said, ā€œWe are pleased and proud to have used local businesses on this project.ā€

Local companies that helped with the renovation included Roundstone Catering from Bowerhill and T&S Lux from Berryfield, which carried out the electrical work.

  • Melksham Police Update

I am writing to introduce myself, Charly Chilton, as your Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant for Melksham and Bradford on Avon.

I bring with me over 17 years of policing experience, all of which has been dedicated to frontline uniformed roles across Swindon, Warminster and most recently Trowbridge.

During this time, I have worked within both Response and Neighbourhood Policing teams.

I was promoted to Sergeant in 2020 and was fortunate to return to a Neighbourhood Policing role the following year in Trowbridge. Alongside my core role, I am also a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) officer and a Police Liaison Officer (PLO), supporting engagement at public protests.

Following a period of maternity leave, I am pleased to have returned and taken up this post, serving the communities of Melksham and Bradford on Avon.

  • Don’t put England flags on lamp posts during World Cup, council warns

Football fans who want to fly England flags from their homes during the World Cup are free to do so but should refrain from hanging them from public railings and lamp posts.

That’s the message from Wiltshire Council as the World Cup gets underway.

And it has pledged to remove flags and banners that are posing a public safety risk.

ā€œWith major sporting events such as the World Cup bringing communities together, many residents will want to show their support by displaying England flags and decorations,ā€ said Martin Smith, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and street scene.

  • Love Melksham Column: A resident’s love letters to her town

People’s Emergency Briefing

My love for Melksham this week is for the dedication and drive of the Melksham Environment Group.

Most of the good things in Melksham are kept together by a small handful of people who make things happen and this little group of eco-enthusiasts are no exception.

One impactful project of MEG this week was the screening in Melksham Assembly Hall of the ā€˜People’s Emergency Briefing’ film led by Chris Packham.

After watching the punchy, powerful summary of the climate concerns facing our country and feeling a little overwhelmed with the scale of it all – I was surprisingly encouraged by the positive optimism of the discussions afterwards. The round tables around the hall came alive with ideas and inspiration and you could feel the energy and possibility that can make things happen with the combined experience, skills and connections of passionate people in Melksham.

  • Scouts take on weekend activity camp

Local Scouts joined other groups from the area recently at a weekend activity camp, where they practised teamwork skills and took part in new challenges.

Over 100 members of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts from Melksham, Bowerhill, Broughton Gifford and Holt took part in the weekend in Liddington.

Highlights included the zip wire, giant swing and raft building, a crate challenge, survivor orienteering and archery. There was also a campfire with storytelling and quiz challenges.

District Lead Volunteer Chris Broom said, ā€œThere were seven activity zones to take part in over the weekend. It encouraged everyone to work as a team and gave them the opportunity to try new things.

ā€œWe all had a fantastic time. Some of the younger Scouts were asleep within five minutes of leaving the site.ā€

  • Promising return for Semington driver after lengthy rebuild

Semington driver, Dan Blake, had a promising first appearance of the season, in the Dave Allan Trophy at Castle Combe on Bank Holiday Monday.

He was back in action for only his second meeting since a sizeable crash at Donington Park in September 2023, with the Renault Clio 197 rebuilt by the Amigo Motorsport team over the winter.

Dan used the race as a shakedown for the upgraded car and teamed up with Amigo Motorsport team manager Rob Gaffney, who brought plenty of experience from the Ginetta GT Supercup and Renault Clio Cup. The 33-car field included some big-name machinery with Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Ginettas and BMW M3s all in the mix.

  • Young martial artists are British champions!

Two young Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes from Melksham are making waves on the national stage after winning gold at the British Championships.

Seven-year-old Moses Clayton-Badat won the British Open and 16-year-old Rico Manos won the British Championship title in the juvenile blue belt division (ages 16–17).

Moses, who lives in Sandridge and attends Bowerhill Primary School, trains at Gracie Barra Melksham, and has quickly developed a strong reputation in the sport, with his latest win adding to a growing medal collection that also includes back-to-back English Championship titles in 2024 and 2025, a gold and three silvers at the British Championships in 2024 and 2025 and a bronze at the London IBJJF Open last year.

His father, Nadeem Badat, said the family were ā€œincredibly proudā€ of his dedication and progress. ā€œBeyond the medals, what really stands out is the discipline, confidence, resilience and sportsmanship he is learning through the sport at such a young age,ā€ he said.

  • Splash Pad closed until July

The Splash Pad will be closed until July whilst the floor is resurfaced at no cost to taxpayers.

The facility in King George V Park opened for the season in May but closed on 1st June due to issues with the recently installed flooring

Contractor The Splash, who installed the facility and re-laid the flooring last year, is now due to install a new sub-surface and relay the tiles, with work commencing on 22nd June. The town council is hoping to reopen the facility on 10th July once the work is complete.

Mayor Saffi Rabey said, ā€œFollowing a meeting with The Splash, I am pleased that we have secured a commitment for the flooring issues to be fully rectified before the summer holidays, at no cost to taxpayers.

ā€œWhile I welcome this outcome, it is our duty to hold contractors to account when they fail to meet the standards we expect on behalf of our residents. I look forward to seeing the splash pad reopened and enjoyed by the community once more.
