Melksham couple document Spanish property renovation in Channel 4 show

Fede and Nigel with a member of the film crew

A Melksham couple will share their journey of renovating a property in Spain in Channel 4’s ‘A New Life in the Sun.’

Nigel and Fede Jimenez Perez Songhurst will appear in series 11 of the programme, which follows expats as they chase their dream life in the sun and set up new businesses abroad.

The new series will air from Monday 5th January and will feature the couple’s story of purchasing a 25-bedroom property in the village of Polopos, Granada, with plans to turn it into a B&B.

The couple travelled to Spain last year to deal with family properties and belongings following the death of Fede’s parents.

The property in Polopos, Granada

“We ended up in Polopos, Granada where Fede’s dad had built a house many years ago, but the village had a lot of family history due to Fede’s grandad being the village doctor in the past,” said Nigel.

“We liked the area a lot and started to look at places possibly to buy. We found a property but it was so big it seemed like it would be impossible, but with sheer determination we viewed the property, which had over 25 rooms in total, and ended up putting in an offer.”

The property was on the market for more than €140,000, which the couple believed was ‘way out of budget’.

“The property itself had been sat empty for many years and needed a lot of work to get it to a livable standard. However, after a few glasses of wine, I put wheels in motion and ended up with our dream coming true,” Nigel said.

“We managed to purchase the property for €70,000 which put us in a great position.”

Nigel said filming for the programme helped keep them motivated during the renovation.

“Being filmed for the show was an amazing experience. It brought a fun atmosphere to the long 10 months of hard work,” he said.

“It helped us keep motivated and we managed to get the B&B finished ahead of time, and now over the winter months we plan to get our accommodation completed before the opening in spring.”

Melksham will also feature in the series. “Filming was also at my mum’s house in Hornbeam Crescent,” Nigel added.

The new series will air on Channel 4 from 5th January.

  • Community transport service helps hundreds of residents

Volunteers at Melksham and District Link supported 530 residents last year, providing transport to medical appointments across the region.

The charity’s figures show its 46 volunteer drivers covered 73,722 miles and made 2,607 journeys, taking 530 clients to 107 destinations. Trips ranged from local surgeries and community hospitals to district hospitals in Bath and Swindon, with a few journeys further afield to Bristol and Oxford.

Chairperson Liz Rowley said district hospitals accounted for over half of all drives for the first time, up 13% on 2024, while trips to community hospitals increased by 47%. “We pride ourselves on operating solely on client donations,” she said. “We do not receive funding or grants, and their generosity allows the scheme to continue making a difference in Melksham.”

Melksham Link offers transport to anyone without other means of getting to appointments. Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles, are reimbursed for mileage, and stay with clients before returning them home.

  • Melksham primary school seeks governors

A primary school in Melksham is seeking dedicated individuals to join its local governing body.

The Manor CE Primary School on Ruskin Avenue is seeking new voluntary governors to join its team. The role involves attending five meetings per year plus visits to the school twice a year to monitor a specific area such as safeguarding, making sure all the children can access the best education regardless of disadvantage or special educational needs.

Felicia Hislop has been a local governor at the school for 1.5 years. She said,

“Being a volunteer governor at The Manor School is honestly one of the most rewarding things I do. It’s a real privilege to be part of something that makes a difference in children’s lives. It’s not just about policies and paperwork; it’s about helping a school thrive and making sure every child has the best chance to succeed.

  • MP welcomes government changes to farm inheritance tax

The government’s decision to change the planned threshold for inheritance tax relief on farms has been welcomed by local MP Brian Mathew.

The government had initially proposed a £1 million limit for full relief. After months of campaigning by farmers across Wiltshire and the country, the threshold will now rise to £2.5 million from April 2026 for inheritance tax bills when farms are passed to the next generation.

Brian Mathew MP said, “I want to pay tribute to the thousands of farmers, many in my constituency who I have been working with, for their tireless campaigning over the last year.

“It is utterly inexcusable that family farmers have been put through over a year of uncertainty and anguish since the government first announced these changes.

“This is undoubtedly a win for farmers and therefore a win for all of us here in Wiltshire who value family farms’ role in food security, protecting our rural environment and providing good local jobs.”

He has been practising daily at Westbury Golf Club and sharing his progress with thousands of followers on social media.
