Melksham Gardeners’ Society 10th Annual Show, featuring both flowers and produce, was held recently.
Cary Hopkins, secretary for the Melksham Gardeners Society reports, “The hot summer meant a lot of things went over early or didn’t grow as expected – even the club’s closed class of red basil only achieved two entries – and there were a few classes that didn’t have entries because of this.
“Despite this hurdle (or maybe because of it!) a good show was still achieved and we had a fair few floral art entries as well. The baking and preserves had an abundant variety of entries in each of the classes and the handicrafts just get better each year.
“The young exhibitors gave us a bumper crop of entries this year too and last but very far from least, the photography class had snaps galore with some very novel ways of displaying.
“Huge thanks go to the committee who work hard before, during and after the show to make the day go so well along with our few helpers; our wonderful judges who all volunteered their time on a Sunday to judge the classes; our lovely stallholders and a great big thank you to the public who turned up on the day.
“Our next meeting is at the Rachel Fowler Hall on Tuesday 25th September with a talk about preserving your produce by Judith Dawson at 7.30pm. £1 for members and £2 for visitors or guests.”
The results of the show were as follows: Section A Flowers : Pauline Shea-Simonds. Section B Vegetables: Mick Company, Closed Class Basil: Mick Company. Section C Fruit: Tied between Mick Company and Rita Sangster (cup given to Rita). Section D Age 3-8: Austin Newman. Section D Age 9-15: Abbie Dark. Section E Floral Art: Beth Dark. Section F Preserves: Janey Cox. Section G Baking: Eve Cartledge. Section H Handicrafts: Marilyn Mills. Section I Photography: Beth Dark.
