MELKSHAM News’ office administrator, Samantha Allwood, is raising money for the British Red Cross to help support refugees in the UK.
Samantha is taking part in the charity’s ‘Miles for Refugees’ fundraiser, and throughout the month of September will run a total of 22 miles – the equivalent length of the English Channel, a journey that many refugees have made and attempted to make.
“I’m aiming to run about six miles a week via a combination of treadmill and outdoor running,” she said. “I will hopefully end it on a high by joining a local 5km parkrun. I was never a runner at school or my adult life (I’m not built as a long distance runner) so doing my first three miles was amazing! However, I forgot to pack socks in my gym bag so have a few blisters to recover from. I won’t be making that mistake again!”
According to the British Red Cross, last year it supported over 36,000 refugees, asylum seekers, vulnerable migrants and their dependants. To help refugees adjust to life in the UK, the charity offers help in a number of ways – from providing emergency provisions for those facing severe hardship, to giving orientation support and friendly advice to those settling into an unfamiliar place.
