Melksham Probus held their February meeting at the Kings Arms, Melksham, on Tuesday 6th February.
The meeting started with lunch; pork chops, roast potatoes and vegetables, followed by a choice of apple crumble, ice cream or cheese and biscuits. All very enjoyable.
Our speaker was Mr Alan Nix, of Swindon, who spoke about the joys of motoring, starting back in the thirties and going to the seventies.
His grandfather and father had a garage in Swindon which was demolished for the construction of the ‘Magic Roundabout’ and Swindon Football Club.
Alan started the talk with photographs, of most of the towns, in the 1940s, showing many cars parked in Marlborough, Devizes and Wootton Bassett to name a few.
The oldest cars were a Ford Y, Morris 8, Austin 10 called The Gordon, 1935 Hillman Minx, Austin Ruby and many more.
Between 1959 and 1968 about 1 million Minis were sold and up to two years ago the Morris Oxford was still being made in India.
It was a very interesting talk, bringing back many memories of yester year and motoring. A big thank you to Alan.
