The Melksham Remembers volunteers are gearing up for the project’s exhibition taking place at Melksham Town Hall on 10th and 11th November.
At the exhibition they will be sharing what they have learned about life in the Melksham community area during the First World War.
Project coordinator, Beth Thomas says, “If you were a member of the Liberal Club or Conservative Club during the First World War you would have found wounded soldiers there as they became Melksham Red Cross Hospital No. 1. Later, Melksham House was taken over and became Red Cross Hospital No. 2.
“The Melksham Remembers volunteers have enjoyed discovering about both hospitals and how generously they were supported by the people of Melksham. There were frequent appeals for both in-kind and financial donations which were acknowledged each week in the Wiltshire Times. There were the first “flag” days and even a livestock sale to raise money to support the work of the Red Cross. There were frequent entertainments for the convalescing troops.
“Come along to the Melksham Remembers Exhibition at Melksham Town Hall on Saturday 10th November from 12pm – 4pm or Sunday 11th November 10am – 2pm and find out more and see our recreated hospital bed. On Saturday Wiltshire Scrapstore will be on hand from 12pm – 3pm with First World War-themed crafts for children. Why not drop in before or after the town’s Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial at 11am on Sunday 11th November when Melksham will be commemorating the centenary of the end of the First World War?”
