Melksham resident’s travel challenge exposes accessibility barriers

Chris Davis at Trafalgar Square

A Melksham resident with a spinal cord injury has been part of a challenge to test the accessibility of public transport.

Chris Davis, who uses a wheelchair, was one of six people with spinal cord injuries from across the UK challenged to plan and complete a journey to central London within 48 hours, using at least two forms of public transport, including trains, buses or the tube.

Each participant was required to map their own route, navigate unexpected barriers and document their experience using video diaries and a detailed scorecard to assess accessibility at every stage.

The challenge was organised by the Spinal Injuries Association, of which Chris is a volunteer. He said,  “Our message is that accessible travel can be challenging but it shouldn’t put you off from trying.”

Despite careful planning, Chris encountered repeated barriers and ultimately, completed the challenge as intended by using two forms of public transport – train and bus. Using the campaign’s scorecard system, Chris rated his journey highly in many areas booking 9/10, staff assistance 9/10, and London buses 9/10. However, this masked a critical failure, taxi accessibility, which he scored just 2/10, and could have resulted in him missing his train.

He said, “Before a journey I try and think of as many things that can go wrong as possible and find solutions for it. Then when I go, I know I have done all that I can.”

Chris encountered his first issue in Melksham. He said, “I couldn’t actually get the bus service to work because it was either at 6.30am or too late for the first train out, so I had to get my wife to drive me to the station in Chippenham. That was a failure in a way, there wasn’t enough of a service to be able to do it.”

Upon reaching the train platform, Chris was disappointed to discover that the accessible carriage was positioned at the very end of the train, meaning he had the furthest distance to travel along the platform.

On the return journey, Chris faced further disappointment when he attempted to use a taxi. He said the ramp was not large enough to accommodate his wheelchair, meaning he was unable to use his preferred mode of transport.

He said, “Better taxi access would make the biggest difference. I would recommend the route to other wheelchair users, but you still have to plan everything in advance, which shouldn’t be the case for public transport.”

Chris said part of the problem is the old infrastructure in the UK. “If you look at new buildings, like the Campus, they have fantastic facilities for people with disabilities and access needs. There are two lifts, accessible parking spaces, everything has been thought about. This is a new building though.”

  • Council urges residents to cut back overgrown vegetation

Melksham Town Council is asking residents to help keep the town’s footpaths and pavements clear by trimming back any trees, hedges or shrubs that overhang public paths.

The appeal comes after reports of vegetation obstructing public walkways in several areas of the town.

The council hopes that residents checking and maintaining vegetation around their properties will help prevent minor issues from becoming larger obstructions and ensure public routes remain accessible.

Cllr Saffi Rabey said, “We have recently received a number of reports from residents about trees, hedges and bushes overhanging pavements and public footpaths.

  • Love Melksham Column: A resident’s love letters to her town

Park Yoga

This week, my love letter to Melksham is written from the sunny expanse of King George V Playing Field, in the peaceful presence that follows Park Yoga.

If you’ve been in the park on a Sunday morning in the summer, you may have seen people heading purposefully across the grass with yoga mats and water bottles. They arrange themselves near two friendly women in green T-shirts next to a fluttering green feather flag, inviting you to this week’s free session of Park Yoga.

This morning, as people arrived from every direction and rolled out their pink and purple mats, I was aware that I didn’t look as yoga-ready as most of them but I was also aware that this is a welcoming, non-judgmental space. Friendly smiles and nods of recognition were shared by a growing crowd of women, men and a handful of children, filling up this side of the field.

  • Are young people in Wiltshire facing barriers to employment?

By Megan Robinson, on work experience with Melksham News

A recent government review led by former health secretary Alan Milburn found that around one in eight people aged 18 to 24 are not in education, employment or training (NEET).

The findings have prompted debate about the barriers young people face when trying to find work and gain experience.

While on work experience with Melksham News, 17-year-old Megan Robinson spoke to recruiters, employers and a university student to explore whether young people in Wiltshire are facing similar challenges.

Recruiters say a lack of experience remains one of the biggest barriers for young jobseekers.

Sharon Chapman, managing director of Melksham-based New Resource Recruitment, said many young people are struggling to secure work in a difficult jobs market.

  • New provider takes over waste collections

Household waste and recycling collections in Wiltshire are now being delivered by a new provider.

Wiltshire Council has moved to a Local Authority Trading Company (LATC) model, with collections now carried out by Ubico, a company owned by local authorities which already provides environmental services across Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire.

The household waste and recycling collection service was previously provided by Hills Waste Solutions for the past eight years.

The council says residents will continue to receive the same collections as usual, with no changes to collection days, frequencies or crews.

  • Research reveals Melksham link to forgotten England rugby player

A rugby historian researching a new book has solved a mystery that remained unsolved for more than 150 years, discovering that a long-forgotten England international was born in Melksham.

Phil Hill was researching the lives of England rugby players for his book, The Lives of England Rugby Players 1871-1899, when he began investigating the identity of Robert Henry Fowler, whose details had remained uncertain in official records.

The Rugby Football Union’s records listed the player only as either Robert or Richard Henry Fowler, born in 1859.

Newspaper reports described him simply as “a heavy, powerful forward” who played for Leeds and Yorkshire, while some historians mistakenly identified him as the son of a Watford postman.

Phil’s research has now established that the player was Robert Henry Fowler, born in Melksham on 6th February 1851 and the son of MP Robert Fowler.

Sam and Katy Gooding will continue to lead the team, and the business will carry on operating from its existing Wiltshire offices in Warminster, Melksham and Trowbridge. Clients will still be dealt with by the same team, offering the same outstanding service they have come to expect.

  • Plans unveiled for 200-home Berryfield development

Proposals for a 200-home development on land between Semington Road and Berryfield Lane have been unveiled as developers prepare to submit a planning application later this summer.

Bellway Homes presented the proposals at a public consultation held at Berryfield Village Hall last month, where residents were invited to view the plans and provide feedback.

The proposed development would cover around 11 hectares. The site includes three agricultural fields, together with previously developed land containing dilapidated Second World War-era buildings and land currently occupied by chicken sheds.
