There were two victors at the Melksham ground on Saturday 28th February.
The first came before a ball was touched. The pitch had not been marked out, so in true grass roots rugby style the home team got out there and painted it by hand as the warm up started. Well done Melksham.
Buoyed up by the unusual start, Melksham got into their stride straight away with Jack Briggs going in for the first followed by backs Joe Hargreaves and Chris Mulgrew. The forwards struck again with Sam Garner going in for his first ever try for the club.
As the half drew to a close a scrum on the visitors’ five meter line saw the ball whipped out to Dave Dyke taking the pass at pace and scoring, Foster adding the extras, 27-0 at half time.
The second half started with the same intent, good work from the forwards setting the platform for Steve Watson to power through and score.
Calne fought hard and worked to stem the flow for the whole game but failed to gain momentum. Simon Down made impact of the bench to score next, Foster converting. The bench continued to add impact with winger Rob Thorne showing his raw pace for Melksham’s next.
In the last quarter Watson and Thorne were both in to complete their brace Hargreaves’ converting both. The final score 58-0.
Skipper Callum Hurn said, “It was a good performance by the whole squad. We varied our attack with confidence as the score grew. You don’t get anything from Calne easily and our focus was intense throughout. With 10 unanswered tries I think we’ll mark out the pitch again next week.”
