MELKSHAM Town FC is now fourth in the Toolstation Premier Division, following three consecutive wins and 13 out of a possible 15 points in the last month.
Town is now well on its way back to title contention as the squad returns to full strength and players’ confidence is boosted by a string of victories. Most recently the team has beaten Welton Rovers 2-1 on Saturday 26th September, and Clevedon Town 4-1 on Saturday 3rd October.
Manager Darren Perrin said, “The results in the last month have been pleasing and, even though we’re a few games ahead of the other teams, I think we’re back in the list of title contenders.
“Against Welton the squad was totally dominant in the first half and we took the first goal from a spectacular effort by Will Stead. Welton then scored a very controversial penalty right on half-time, and we were woeful in the second half. We were absolutely inept and were very lucky to get a winning goal in added time from Ben Thomson.
“Against Clevedon last weekend it was a different story and we were dominant from start to finish. The team took the lead after six minutes with a penalty from Dan Kovacs. After that we had goals from Gary Higdon, Ryan Bennett and Joe Stradling, only answered by one from Clevedon.
“My biggest concern is that the team isn’t taking enough of the chances being created. By this point in the season we should have scored 40 or so goals but it’s more like 20, so that’s got to improve.
“Otherwise, fair play to the lads – the play has improved and we’re in good stead now.
“It’s pleasing to see the team back to a clean bill of health. Availability is much better now and it shows; the players have got their confidence back and are playing much more consistently.
“We’re hoping Ian Jeffery will be back this weekend, and having Ben Thomson playing again has been a big boost for the squad – he’s a great addition and adds balance to our play.
“I think a few teams in the league will be looking over their shoulders at Melksham now, they know what these lads are capable of. We were aiming to have a steady and consistent season but if things keep going the way they are, who knows what could happen.”
Ground Hoppers day
On Sunday 18th October, Melksham Town will play Gillingham Town at the Conigre as part of a ‘Ground Hoppers’ event.
The game is expected to draw in a big crowd of fans who travel to visit teams and grounds across the country. The ground-hoppers will spend the Saturday watching games in the Bristol area, before visiting Melksham on Sunday afternoon.
Darren said, “The ground hoppers game will have supporters from across the UK, and we’re expecting a crowd of about 400 people. It would be fantastic to see as many home fans as possible.” Kick off is at 2.30pm.
