Melksham Town to face Swindon Town in preseason friendly

Melksham Town has unveiled a busy and exciting preseason fixture list in preparation for the 2025/26 campaign.

The highlight is a home match against League Two side Swindon Town on Saturday 12th July (3pm kick-off). The match will see Ian Holloway’s team return to Oakfield Stadium just a year after the two clubs last met in a friendly, which the Robins won 3-1 in front of a bumper crowd.

Tickets are now on sale at the following prices: adults – £10, concessions – £8, student (16-18) – £5 and child – £2.

Town will start their pre-season preparations with a short journey to Corsham Town’s Southbank Ground on Friday 4th July (7.30 kick-off). Corsham finished 10th in last season’s Hellenic League Premier Division, offering a strong first test for the Black and Yellow.

On 19th July (3pm), Melksham will travel to Nursteed Road to take on Devizes Town followed by a double header on Tuesday 22nd July with two Town sides in action. The first team will welcome National League South side Weston-Super-Mare to Oakfield Stadium. Scott Bartlett’s team finished eighth last season, narrowly missing the National League South play-offs. It promises to be a tough test and the final chance for home fans to see their team in action at Oakfield before the Southern League Division One South campaign starts.

Meanwhile, a Melksham Town XI will travel to Odd Down on the same evening to contest the Mark Brown Memorial Cup at the Lew Hill Memorial Ground against the Western League Division One side.

The final match of pre-season will be away to National League South side Chippenham Town, competing for the Ian Monnery Trophy. The two teams previously met last season when Melksham secured a 2-1 win at Oakfield. The Black and Yellow will be eager to retain the trophy and carry momentum into their league campaign.

Tickets for the home match against Swindon Town are now on sale. Supporters are encouraged to get their seats early and be part of what promises to be a great afternoon of entertainment.

Melksham Town strengthens squad with five new signings ahead of new season

Town has added five new signings and a new goalkeeping coach ahead of the new 2025/26 season where they will be looking to improve on their eighth place finish last season.

Archie Milne, a 19-year-old midfielder and former Swindon Town academy player, joins the club after a brief spell at Corsham Town last season, cut short by injury. Manager Mark Collier explained: “Archie is now fully fit, has a solid background, can play a couple of different positions and will add competition for places.”

Archie is joined by Olly Mehew, Will Christopher, Josh Bennett and Adam Forster in putting pen to paper at Oakfield. The quintet brings a mixture of experience, creativity, defensive depth and a strong physical presence to the side.

The return of 28-year-old defender Josh Bennett from Taunton Town is a huge boost. A former fans’ favourite, Bennett left last year with a heavy heart, but is now back in black and yellow. “Losing Josh last year was a real blow to us,” said Mark. “He is very competitive and highly respected in the dressing room. I make no apologies for saying this, but Josh is an outstanding signing for us. He will play a major role on and off the pitch for us.”

Meanwhile, Adam Forster, a 6’2” goalkeeper who previously played for Larkhall, Gloucester City, Dorchester Town and Tampa Spartans in the USA, is a key addition between the sticks.

“Our keeper situation was well documented last season, with injuries to both of our loan keepers,” said Mark. “Adam will bring stability to the position. Adam did particularly well against us last season, playing for Larkhall. Adam has a presence, is a good size and will strengthen our options going forward.”

Town has also secured Will Christopher, a 26-year-old defender/midfielder from Yate Town with nearly 300 appearances at this level. “Will has played almost 300 games at this level, he brings a good knowledge of this division and will bring strength in depth to the already competitive squad,” explained Mark.

The Black and Yellow attack is bolstered by 27-year-old forward Olly Mehew, a pacy and creative addition who can operate centrally, wide or just behind the strikers. His former clubs include Bristol Rovers, Forest Green, Merthyr Town, Yate and Swindon Supermarine. “Olly was a priority signing for us,” said Mark. “His quality and experience will be a huge asset to us. Following several meetings, Olly really showed a desire to join us. He is a good lad who will bring so much to the dressing room.”

Melksham have also appointed Seb Tylek as their new goalkeeping coach. Seb, a local coach who joins from Frome Town, will be responsible for developing the team’s goalkeepers.

“Seb’s another local boy, he will take responsibility for all the keepers,” said Mark. “He is experienced within this role and is a vital addition to the coaching setup.”

The first friendly match against Corsham Town is now less than a month away and season tickets are available to buy.

Prices are £160 for adults, £130 for concessions, and £80 for students (16-18). A season ticket guarantees entry to all home league games, including key local matchups against Frome and Westbury.

“With a revamped squad, a strong backroom team and a wonderful playing surface at Oakfield, the future looks bright,” said the club. “With new signings, a luscious playing surface and a great atmosphere around the club, it is sure to be an exciting season — join us for the ride!”

Town appoint Kevin Bush and Adam Young as co-chairmen for 2025/26 Season

Melksham Town has announced a key leadership change with Kevin Bush and Adam Young being appointed as co-chairmen of the club.

The two will share responsibilities at the helm, guiding Melksham forward as the new season approaches.

Kev Bush commented: “I am looking forward to working with Adam and the team again to make the matchday experience as good as we can for the supporters. We are aligned in our vision for the club, and I can’t wait for this season to start. Success is the result of everyone pulling in the same direction. Up The Sham.”

Adam Young added: “I’m really happy to be joining Kev as being co-chairman of MTFC. Being a co-chairman means that we can both bring different strengths and experience to the role, I will also continue in my role as youth chairman which I hope will continue to bring our fantastic youth section and senior section closer together still.

“I know Kev and I share the same vision and we both really look forward to working with Mark and his management team this season to try and unlock this club’s true potential.”

  • Melksham Parish Room in the running for £30,000 revival

Melksham’s much-loved Parish Room, which has fallen into disrepair after flooding and years of wear and tear, has been named one of four finalists in the running to receive a £30,000 regeneration grant.

Local residents are being urged to vote for the Parish Room in Certas Energy’s national Community Bloom Fund, helping the St Michael’s Church team secure the funding needed to revive the ‘crumbling’ space.

Tucked just off Canon Square, in the heart of Melksham, the Parish Room has long served as a meeting point for people of all ages. However, a failing heating system and other structural issues mean the building is no longer fit for purpose, with some community groups having to stop using the hall.

“This building is small but mighty,” said project manager Hannah Thomson, who is coordinating the renovation alongside local volunteers. “It already serves a wonderful cross-section of local people, but we know that by making these improvements, we can engage even more members of our community.

Voting closes on Wednesday 23rd July. To vote for Melksham Parish Room, visit: www.melksham.church/vote

  • Popular Melksham Open Gardens returns this month

Keen gardeners in Melksham are due to open up their gardens this month for the annual open gardens event in aid of The Children’s Society.

Running on Sunday 20th July, the event has become a staple of the town’s summer calendar and a major fundraiser for The Children’s Society, which provides specialist support for young people to make positive changes.

Organiser Lesley Windebank said, “We have a record number of gardens open to the public this year, including several new ones. The gardens will be open from 1pm to 6pm.”

  • Volunteers help decorate Church House ahead of grand opening

Nearly 20 volunteers from St Michael’s Church and the local community turned out to help decorate a historic building owned by the church, ahead of its grand opening later this month.

The property at 11 Canon Square, known as Church House, was purchased by the church team as part of an expansion project to convert the top rooms into accommodation for staff, space for a parish office, community rooms and additional space for youth groups.

To prepare the building for its grand opening on 18th July, volunteers, including members from paint brand Dulux, helped decorate the space using Armstead Paint donated by AkzoNobel as part of some community paint days.

A member of the church team, Hannah Thomson, said, “The hours put in by volunteers have been extraordinary – especially considering the unexpected things an old building likes to throw at you.

“Paint efforts have been ongoing since and this renovation project is so nearly complete.”

  • Town Council to stop live streaming meetings on Facebook

Melksham Town Council has voted to stop live streaming its meetings on Facebook over ‘safety concerns’, but the move has come under fire with some councillors warning this reduces transparency.

At a recent full council meeting, councillors debated a motion put forward by Cllr Jennie Westbrook to end the use of Facebook Live due to concerns over safety, technical reliability and online abuse. The motion proposed using Microsoft Teams, which the council also already uses, to broadcast meetings and uploading them to YouTube within 24 hours.

The motion from Cllr Jennie Westbrook read, “If the motion is not implemented, the Council would remain exposed to the continued risk of crime and antisocial online behaviour, including trolling, live abuse, and coordinated harassment. Facebook Live provides no tools to manage or moderate who watches or interacts during a meeting, and exposes councillors and officers to real-time targeting.”

Former mayor Tom Price, who served on the council for four years, attended the meeting and questioned the justification behind the move. He told councillors that although he had received abuse on social media, including on Facebook, none of it stemmed from live streaming.

The pitch will also be made available to local sports clubs and community groups outside of school hours.

  • Thousands line streets for colourful Melksham Carnival

Thousands of people lined Melksham’s streets for this year’s carnival procession, which saw the town come alive with colour, crowds – and lots of fancy dress.

Residents were out in force on Saturday 5th July to support a wide variety of entrants, including dancers, a marching band, bikers, and characters ranging from superheroes to Disney princesses.

The procession was led by a group of costumed bikers who interacted with the crowd. They were followed by the carnival royalty in open-top cars, along with entries from dance groups, schools, sports clubs and businesses from the town and beyond.

“The carnival team and I would like to thank so many people who support us, from dresses and crowns to vehicles and donations, marshals and the public,” said Michelle Brightwell of the Melksham Carnival team. “We are so grateful to you, and we can’t wait to do it all again next year.

“The absolute highlights had to be the Top Hat Riders, who brought smiles to so many people by letting them sit on their bikes and stopping for photos, and also the sheer determination of Broughton Gifford Preschool to be with us, despite their fully decorated float breaking down just as they set off to the start point. But they pulled it together and arrived in plenty of time."

  • Melksham residents to vote on town’s future in Neighbourhood Plan referendum

Melksham residents will soon be able to vote on the future of their town and surrounding villages, as the updated Joint Melksham Neighbourhood Plan (JMNP2) goes to a public referendum on Thursday 31st July.

The Neighbourhood Plan is a key planning document that gives local communities a direct say in shaping how their area develops. It covers everything from housing, green space and infrastructure, to supporting businesses and protecting historic buildings – and if approved in the referendum, it will carry legal weight when deciding future planning applications in the area.

The plan, developed by Melksham Town Council and Melksham Without Parish Council, has now passed its independent examination, a major milestone that clears the way for it to be formally adopted – but only if approved by the community.

“This is your plan, built on your feedback,” said representatives from the town and parish councils. “It’s an important chance to have your say in shaping Melksham’s future.”

  • Melksham players help Dorset and Wilts lift national trophy at Twickenham

Two Melksham Rugby Club players helped Dorset and Wiltshire clinch the Gill Burns Division 3 Trophy in dramatic fashion at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium recently.

Charlotte Wellon and Nicole Crowley played in the Division 3 County Championship Final against Sussex in a thrilling encounter that ended in a dramatic penalty shootout.

In a hard-fought and evenly-matched game, Dorset and Wiltshire were leading with a minute to go but Sussex converted a penalty in front of the post to draw the game 15-15.

The game went to a nerve-racking kicking competition, with each team taking six kicks from different positions. Dorset & Wilts held their nerve to win 2–0, securing the Gill Burns Division 3 Trophy.

“A massive well done to the girls who represented Melksham Rugby Club; they made the badge and town proud,” said Scott Simmons from Melksham Rugby Club.

“Credit also has to go to Sophie Gilson and Tia Hunter-Hashka who played their part to get Dorset and Wilts to the final.”
