A Melksham woman recovering from breast cancer is preparing to trek 62 miles to raise funds for breast cancer awareness charity, CoppaFeel!
Debbie Holman was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 at the age of 38. After undergoing a right-side mastectomy (a surgical procedure to remove a breast), six rounds of chemotherapy, and 12 months of Herceptin treatment, she has dedicated her life to raising awareness of breast cancer and fundraising for charity.
In June, she will embark on a six-day trek across the Isle of Skye, aiming to raise £2,500 for CoppaFeel!, a breast cancer awareness charity that promotes early detection by encouraging women under 30 to check their breasts regularly.
The Isle of Skye is the largest and most northerly of the major islands in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. Debbie will trek across challenging, uneven terrain, walking for up to nine hours a day.
“This trek is not just an adventure; it’s a vital opportunity to raise awareness and funds for our cause,” says Debbie, who was Melksham’s carnival queen just before her diagnosis.
“Cancer really messes with your life. During chemotherapy, I was very poorly at times—I had sepsis twice and flu. Had I not found the lump, my outcome might not have been as good. It could have been a death sentence, and that’s exactly what this charity is working to prevent.
“The sooner you notice something isn’t normal, the better your chances of a positive prognosis in the long run.”
Debbie will take on the challenge alongside a group of others raising awareness and funds for CoppaFeel!
“It’s daunting but exciting,” she says. “I think three out of the five days are quite hilly, so I have a lot of practice walks to do.”
“As I continue my journey with hormone therapy for the next five to ten years, I feel a strong calling to spread awareness about the importance of recognising the signs of breast cancer. I invite you to join me on this journey—your support can help ensure that more young people are informed and empowered when it comes to their health.”
A spokesperson for CoppaFeel! said, “We believe that knowledge is power, especially when it comes to breast cancer awareness. As the UK’s only youth-focused breast cancer charity, we are dedicated to empowering every young person aged 18 to 24 to take charge of their health by checking their chests regularly.
“Our mission is clear; to educate individuals on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer so they feel confident in advocating for themselves. By encouraging early detection, we can significantly improve treatment outcomes and survival rates. Early diagnosis truly can save lives, and together, we can make a difference.”
Debbie will set off on her challenge on 14th June. She said, “Together, let’s spread the message of hope and awareness.”
