EXPLORATION is under way to find suitable areas of land within the Melksham area that could accommodate new trees.
Already earmarked as potential sites for new trees, King George V playing field, verges along Sandridge Road, and Lowbourne – using large wooden planters.
The “ambitious” tree planting initiative is being led by the town council who are attempting to add to the biodiversity of the area in response to climate change and the ecology crisis.
They are also planning to take part in the ‘Queen’s Green Canopy’ – a tree planting scheme in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year.
The scheme is inviting people from across the United Kingdom to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’ from next month, when the tree planting season begins, through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022.
Up to £4,000 has been ringfenced by the town council to purchase more established trees to plant in public areas; and they will apply for additional grant funding from other organisations and charities.
The town council is also eligible to apply for up to 420 free saplings from the Woodland Trust, which could be given away to residents to plant.
