Nature reserve left to burn by vandals

Conigre Mead vandalism

VANDALS set fire to a bench, young trees, timber and wood at Conigre Mead Nature Reserve on Tuesday 1st May.

The nature reserve, managed by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust alongside 40 other nature reserves in Wiltshire,  is free and open to the public. Conigre Mead is one of the smallest that they manage.

Wiltshire Wildlife reported on their Facebook page, “Recently, a group of vandals stole a brand new bench, newly-erected in the area, where it had been wrenched out of the ground and legs sawn off. They also stole another old bench, pieces of timber and dead wood and young trees and then set fire to them, with one tree in the area completely de-barked with litter scattered all around.”

Speaking to Melksham News, Wiltshire Wildlife said, “We are extremely disappointed and upset to have had this vandalism and arson take place at our Conigre Mead nature reserve. A lot of staff and volunteer time goes into preserving the area for the benefit of both wildlife and people, and there are cost implications for repairing the area.

“As a charity, this has a real impact on the work that we can do and will take valuable staff time away from conservation work to rectify the area. We are also very concerned by the arson; if conditions were right, then this fire could have easily spread and caused a lot more damage.”

Wiltshire Police said, “This incident has been reported to us and we are investigating the matter. We would appeal for anyone with information to call police on 101.”

  • Council calls on Government to rethink Melksham bypass decision

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Someone is killed or seriously injured on a notorious stretch of the A350 roughly once every 11 weeks, a senior councillor has said, as Wiltshire Council demands the Government rethink its decision to ditch funding for the Melksham bypass. During an emergency debate at full council on Tuesday 20th October, councillors overwhelmingly backed a motion condemning the decision and demanding continued investment in the key north-south route. They also called for the more than £500,000 the council has spent developing the scheme to be refunded.

The reserved matters application covers the scale, layout, appearance, landscaping and access for the proposed development on land south of the A365 Bath Road and west of Turnpike Garage. It follows outline planning permission being granted earlier this year for the warehouse and office development, which the company says will be a major investment in the town and create hundreds of jobs.

  • New book brings forgotten RAF Melksham history to life

The history of Melksham’s former RAF station is being brought to life in a new book exploring its role in training thousands of service personnel during the Second World War and beyond. Written by retired RAF Wing Commander Rob Cumming, RAF Melksham: Its Beginnings, Life and Re-creation traces the beginnings, working life and eventual re-creation of the station, which opened in 1940 and closed in 1965. Rob began researching the history while working with Melksham Remembers, a local history group. “It became clear that while thousands of airmen and airwomen trained and lived at RAF Melksham from its opening in 1940, its existence is rapidly fading from the community
