AFTER swearing ‘never again’ to take part in an ‘ultra hike’, local charity trustee, Bryan Clover, has signed up to take part in the Thames Path Challenge.
The ‘ultra challenge’ involves walking 100km non-stop in 24 hours, along the River Thames from Putney Bridge in London to Henley on Thames. He will be raising money for Melksham-based charity, 4Youth, for which he is a trustee.
“Last September I hiked the 84in48; an 84-mile hike non-stop over 48 hours which was, well, painful to say the least. Having sworn to never do it again, here I am! So, after much deliberation I’ve decided to embark on another ultra hike on Saturday 10th September. This time, just for fun and to increase the challenge, I’ve decided to pitch it against the clock by joining an organised hike – The Ultra Challenge.
“I’m partly doing this to lose some weight as having a fitness goal for September will force me to train and get out with the back-pack, but mainly I just miss the hiking and the peace and quiet; as so much research has proven time and again, getting out and about is a fantastic resource for improving our mental health.”
To support him, 4Youth is seeking a sponsor. They say, “4Youth are looking for a major sponsor to take the headlines for all of the event marketing and social media work. There will be the usual sponsorship opportunities, but the charity felt that one company might want to take the lead and get their brand out there for all to see, including the hundreds of other walkers!”
Bryan adds, “4Youth has some cracking programmes helping younger people in and around Melksham and if I can do something to keep the momentum going, then why not? As my old initial officer training instructor in the RAF once said, ‘It’s only pain’.”
