MELKSHAM Town Councillor, Tom Price, has shared his thoughts on his first four months in the role.
Cllr Price – who was elected under the ‘Together for Melksham – a fresh start’ campaign – was one of 10 councillors elected to the town council that were new to the role, with no prior experience.
Speaking to Melksham News about his time so far in his new role as town councillor, cllr Price said, “As you can imagine, it was extremely daunting first walking into the Assembly Hall on many of our first days as councillors.
“Nothing prepares you for that room surrounded by the other 14 elected representatives, hardworking officers and members of the public. But as the months have gone on, I’ve certainly felt a surge of confidence within myself and very much enjoy the discussions develop, in the council meetings, into motions and votes.
“There have been some very big topics that have needed our attention which is very exciting to get behind, but of course has meant we have had to go full throttle in researching, dissecting and discussing these issues.
“I’ve found it really enjoyable networking with new councillors, officers, residents, police and of course ex-councillors in order to fact find and get some history on so much of the town. I have a real respect for anyone who does this and find everyone extremely approachable and friendly. I have certainly made some real friendships through this role and regularly communicate with different members, depending on the topic that needs my attention.
“The importance of having councillors with individual beliefs and the confidence to speak their own mind is crucial for open discussion and I completely feel this council has that. I’ve found this council extremely constructive in their difference of opinions which leads to some great and open debates, which I find gives every side a chance to air their views. An example I would use would be the latest bypass discussion had within the council.
“I’m looking forward to the next four years and would always encourage residents to communicate personally with councillors with any issues or concerns they have; we are all volunteers and do this role because we have a very real love for our town and community.”
