IT’s a big win for girls’ rugby in Melksham as for the first time in 10 years, a girls-only team has been launched in the town.
Melksham Fawns, an under 12s girls’ rugby team, has been set up following an increase in girls wanting to play the sport.
Youth chairman Phil Dwyer said, “This is the first time we have had enough girls in Melksham to put out an under 12s girls’ team.”
Last year, Melksham Rugby Club launched the Girls’ Hub, offering girls the chance to play rugby in a fun and social way, without the competitive side and some of the players from the Girls’ Hub have gone on to join the newly formed girls’ team.
The team has been kitted out with a new rugby kit which will be officially launched at a ‘come and try it day’ on Sunday 3rd September.
Scott Simmons, team manager, said, “Going into the new season, the girls’ squad has grown and we launched the girls-only team as we were in a very unique position last year with around 14 girls across two teams.
“This is exciting as we have not had a girls-only team for over 10 years at the rugby club. They are all kitted out and look very smart and professional.
“It’s about creating a fun, safe environment with a platform to allow the girls to perform and take their hobby where they want to and we go into the new season with a squad of 23. We have basically created a model and hopefully we can start building the ages back up to U18s.
“We are always open to more players so come and join us.”
Melksham Rugby Club president, Rich Carlile added, “Melksham Rugby Football Club is thrilled to announce the successful launch of the new kit for the girls’ team. It’s all thanks to the hard work and dedication of the coaching staff and admins.
“The girls’ hub has done an incredible job in attracting more young girls under 12 to rugby and encouraging their participation in sports. With a consistent turnout of 25, their efforts have truly paid off. Well done to everyone involved in making this achievement possible!”
There is a ‘have a go day’ on Sunday 3rd September from 10am to 2pm, for girls and boys aged 3-17 years old and on this day, the girls’ team will also launch their playing strip.
