A team from Melksham, put together especially for a major skittles tournament, walked away with the winners’ trophy.
The Original Sports, as they decided to call themselves, travelled to Torquay in South Devon for the weekend competition where they faced tough opposition from 28 teams from Wales, Gloucestershire, Bristol Avon, Dorset and Somerset.
The team, made up of players from Spencer Sports and Social Club, stormed through to the final eight, beating their nearest rivals, the White Hart Harriers from Weston Super Mare by 440 points to 408.
The team jokingly put their success down to 5am team briefings, but said that everyone kept a clear head during the games and played above their potential. The team donated their £150 prize money to Cancer Research UK, bringing the total raised over the weekend to more than £550.
There was more success for Melksham too, with the Good Bad and Ugly A team coming fourth with 397 points. Their team member Pat Brewer was highest scoring man of the competition with 59 points.
The tournament is one of a series of around 20 organised each year by Serious About Events from Torquay who also stage the British Skittles Championship.
