A NEW ‘exciting’ logo for Melksham Town Council has been given the thumbs up by the majority of councillors.

But the town’s mayor, cllr Jon Hubbard, has criticised the new look and the £640 spent on the project, branding it a ‘horrendous waste of public money’.
The mayor was the only councillor to vote against using the new logo – which centres around the Town Hall and the River Avon – at a meeting last month.
He said, “I think that this is the most horrendous waste of public money. We are going to be having a hell of a debate about the budget in a few weeks’ time, and the challenges that we are going to be facing with the budget – and I can’t believe that we are going to be spending this money on how we look.”
The new logo will be used ‘as and when appropriate’ to promote local events and the town council’s services around the town. It will not be replacing the current town crest, which will still be used for more formal occasions.
Festive variations of the logo have also been designed, which include Christmas, Halloween and LGBT Pride themes.
“This is so exciting,” said cllr Carl Houghton about having a ‘multi-use’ logo, who went on to suggest that the community could get involved in designing other variations of the logo.
The use of the Town Hall in the logo was previously queried by some councillors at a meeting in September, with some concerned that the historic building was not well-known in the community.
However, at last month’s meeting cllr Sue Mortimer explained that she had changed her mind, and said that she felt that using the Town Hall was an opportunity to promote the historic building, and educate people on what the town council does.
