New volunteers needed as demand for Link scheme soars

Melksham and District Link service is looking to new volunteers, following a 30% surge in demand for its services in recent weeks.

Link is a charity where volunteers drive clients to medical appointments when they have no other way of getting there. They wait for their client and then drive them home after their appointment. Clients are asked for donations towards the cost of the trip and drivers are recompensed at 45p per mile in expenses.

In May this year the service completed 236 trips, up from 181 in 2022. Since 1st January, more than 1,000 trips have been made for Melksham residents with the most popular destination being the RUH in Bath.

Trips to Bristol, Swindon, and Salisbury as well as many more local destinations have also taken place. However, driver holidays combined with other things such as car breakdowns and illness mean that the service really does need more volunteer drivers. Unfortunately in May, Link had to turn down several requests because of a lack of available drivers.

Chairperson Liz Rowley said, “The volunteer driving role is not too onerous and volunteers choose which days they wish to volunteer and where they are prepared to drive. Some drivers only do local trips whilst others are willing to drive to almost any destination. It really is a very flexible volunteering role and open to anyone of any age or circumstance.

“Drivers report that they feel they are doing something that is really valued by our clients and find it a rewarding experience which doesn’t take up too much of their time.

“We are also looking for volunteers to help coordinate the lifts. Volunteer coordinators work from home using a phone and laptop that Link provide. This is a great role for well organised people who are happy chatting to our clients and drivers on the phone.

“I believe these roles really suit recently retired people. They provide a way of giving you a purpose but without the regular commitment of a full-time job. One of our newly recruited volunteer coordinators said it was nice to use her brain again. Our drivers feel a great sense of satisfaction about being able to help others and enjoy the social interaction with clients. Our aim is to make a difference in Melksham.”

Driver Ian Argyle, who joined Link last October, said, “The benefit that the Link scheme brings to Melksham is clear; it feels like a real privilege to be a small part of the process.”

Meeting a range of interesting people prompted Ian to volunteer; he shared the story of the lady he has driven several times who loves to interact with his Satnav. He said, “She tells her daughter that I have a talking car. It has been a revelation to have spent time with complete strangers and having the opportunity to discover their background and history.

“Due to the increased demand at present, Link is also reminding clients that they do need to book their trips at least a week in advance,” said Liz. “It is very difficult to help with requests at short notice.”

Anyone interested in a volunteering role should contact Link on 0797 912 9052 or email them via melkshamlink@gmail.com to arrange a chat about the opportunity.  More details on the service can be found at www.melkshamlink.com

  • RSPB Wiltshire Big Garden Birdwatch

The world’s largest garden wildlife survey returns this month, with hundreds of thousands of people watching and counting the UK’s garden birds over the last weekend in January for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

Almost 600,000 people took part in across the UK in 2025, counting more than 9 million birds of over 80 species. In Wiltshire just over 8,800 residents joined in the count and the RSPB hopes even more residents will sign up for 2026.

The survey provides a valuable snapshot of how our most common garden birds are faring and taking part is one positive way to take action for birds and nature.

This year’s event takes place on 23rd, 24th and 2th January. People in Wiltshire are asked to spend an hour watching and counting the birds in their garden or local park, or from their balcony, then send their results to the RSPB.

In Wiltshire the top three birds recorded last year were: House Sparrow, Blue Tit, and Woodpigeon.

  • Safety improvements planned at hospital car park

The car park and lighting at Melksham Community Hospital could be upgraded to improve safety for pedestrians and patients.

An application by NHS Property Services has been submitted to Wiltshire Council to reconfigure and resurface the designated car parking area outside the hospital on Spa Road, along with the installation of new lighting.

The proposed reconfiguration includes 28 parking spaces, including five accessible spaces, one ambulance bay and two pull-in bays. The plans also include a new grassed area, the installation of 11 external lighting columns and the replacement of three existing lighting columns.

The revised layout would also create a dedicated pedestrian route linking all parking spaces and providing a safer pathway for people accessing the hospital.

  • Strong start for new women-only running group

More than 30 women have taken part in the first sessions of a new women-only running group in Melksham, created to offer a safe and supportive space for exercise and social connection.

The group, Healthy Empowered Runners, was started this month by four local women and will meet weekly. It aims to provide a welcoming and inclusive space for women to meet others, get active, and enjoy the benefits of running.

One of the organisers, Tracy Steel, said, “Our first run went so well despite the freezing temperatures. We all crossed the line together and there was such a great atmosphere of support and kindness. I’ve had lots of messages since the first run, so we are expecting even more women to join. I think we have started something very special.

  • Melksham motorists face triple whammy over parking charges

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Melksham motorists face a triple whammy of pricier parking tickets, longer chargeable hours, and a hike in Sunday tariffs if plans being considered by Wiltshire Council are adopted.

On Thursday 15th January the council’s environment select committee will consider new Parking Plan and Tariff proposals.

The Wiltshire Council Parking Plan 2026 to 2030 proposes an increase in parking charges of 20 per cent plus a nearest 10p charge, an extension to the chargeable parking hours to between 7am and 7pm, and a change to Sunday parking charges to bring them in line with weekend rates.

For residents with parking permits, the cost of the service would rise in line with pay and display charges.

In Melksham parking in Wiltshire Council car parks costs between 40p and 50p an hour, and between £3.50 and £7.70 for all-day parking. All-day Sunday parking costs 70p.

Under the proposed tariffs, an hour’s parking would increase to between 50p and 70p an hour, and between £4.20 and £9.30 for all-day parking. Weekday rates would apply on Sundays.

  • Lions’ annual fundraiser gives boost to local charities

Local groups and charities have been given a funding boost after Melksham Lions Club raised £5,500 with its annual Santa Float.

Children’s hospice Julia’s House, mental health charity Wiltshire Mind, and Melksham Christmas Lights Group were all given funds after the Santa Float journeyed around the town collecting donations in the run-up to Christmas.

Lions Club President Simon White said, “On behalf of the Melksham Lions Club, I would like to thank all the people of Melksham and the surrounding area who have always been so generous, especially at Christmas, as we have raised, with your help, £5,500, which is a fantastic result."

  • Travellers’ camp enforcement order welcomed by council

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

A ruling that will see non-travellers evicted from an overcrowded camp in Semington has been welcomed by Wiltshire Council.

Patrick Ward has been told to evict residents who are not members of the traveller community from Greenacres Mobile Park in Semington, near West Wiltshire Crematorium.

He has also been told there are too many caravans on the traveller site and has been ordered to remove some of them.

The park has permission for 28 mobile caravans over 14 pitches, after planning permission was granted in 2008.

However, enforcement officers say they have counted 77 homes on the site and allege that some are being rented on the open market to people who aren’t classed as travellers for planning purposes.

  • Slimming World – a “healthy and enjoyable way to lose weight”

Slimming World consultants Jayne, Matt and Kathy from Melksham say this January they’ll be saying goodbye to the term ‘Syns’ following a review of the organisation’s language and terminology.

Slimming World has also introduced a new ‘Healthy Extras’ category within its plan for healthy fats. That means foods like avocado, olive oil and nut butters will be even easier for members to incorporate into their week with an even greater focus on the health benefits of these foods.

Commenting on the changes, Jayne, Matt and Kathy who run groups in Berryfields, Bowerhill and Melksham Guide Hut in the town centre said, “Our ethos is to inspire and motivate people to make positive mindset changes and develop lasting healthy habits around food and activity – all in a culture of care, respect and understanding.

  • Council scraps £18,000 dog park equipment for £16.20

More than £18,000 of public money has been lost after Melksham’s dog park equipment was sold for just £16.20 as scrap metal.

The agility equipment was installed in the dog park section of the King George V park in 2023 but the area was closed just weeks later after a Melksham News investigation following safety concerns by dog owners. This found the equipment did not meet The Kennel Club’s ‘fun agility’ guidelines, with one structure more than a metre higher than recommended.

The Kennel Club said it was “deeply concerned”, leading councillors to shut the site and remove the equipment.

The installation included three hurdles, a hoop, a pipe tunnel, a dog walk, a ramp, a see-saw and metal poles designed for dogs to weave through. Concerns were raised that the equipment was too high and that the surfaces were too slippery.

In 2024 the council was also advised that hard-standing rubber matting would need to be removed, taking the total cost of the project to almost £40,000.

The equipment was stored by the council before recently being sold in December for just £16.20 as scrap metal.

Two years on, the site remains an open space for dog exercise, with no agility equipment in place.

Melksham Town Council has been contacted for comment.

  • Melksham Times Past

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis

Ten Years Too Long to Wait
The hearing started Saturday afternoon in November 1916 and went well into the evening, including several long speeches and a lot of testimony.

The bench was hearing a breach of promise of marriage case brought by a woman against her former fiancé; she sought to recover £200 in damages.

Edwin Horace Rosier (“Ted”) defended himself by stating that, after 10 years of being engaged, he got tired of waiting for Elsie Mabel Smith-Keen to set a date. So, he broke off the engagement.

Rosier counterclaimed for £60, money he alleged he had paid to Smith-Keen in small increments for her to set aside for their wedding.
