Olympic-themed Big Pledge is back – and you can join Team Melksham!

Wiltshire’s Big Pledge is back, and this year’s Olympic themed-challenge will see people take a virtual journey to Rio.

‘The Big Pledge – Road to Rio’ will run for eight weeks from Saturday 4th June until Friday 29th July and it challenges participants to complete 20 stages and take a virtual journey around the world, including taking stops at previous Olympic host cities.

The journey starts in ‘London’ and finishes at this year’s Olympic host city, ‘Rio de Janeiro’. People can now register to take part.

People can sign up to the challenges as individuals or as a team, and this year they are: • Road to Rio (Teams only) • Running Challenge (Individuals only) • Cycling Challenge (Individuals only) •   Swimming Challenge  (Individuals only) • Walking Challenge (Individuals only) • Junior Sports Challenge (Individuals only) •  Ultimate Sports Challenge (Individuals/team).

Melksham Town Council have decided to create a team in the Road to Rio Challenge so anyone who would like to join in the team can select ‘Team Melksham’ to join.

This will mean that everyone’s miles across Melksham will all contribute to the Team Melksham score, which is hoped to be higher than our local counterparts such as Trowbridge and Chippenham.

This is the third year of Wiltshire’s Big Pledge and, as part of the council’s Legacy for Wiltshire programme, it aims to improve the health and wellbeing of Wiltshire’s communities.

The Wiltshire Council campaign launched on 28th April at Springfield Community Campus in Corsham, and saw the council’s community engagement managers starting the challenge themselves.

They collectively travelled 150 miles, the equivalent distance from County Hall in Trowbridge to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, by running, walking, cycling, rowing and swimming using the facilities at the health and wellbeing centre.

Wiltshire Council corporate director, Maggie Rae said, “We couldn’t resist adding an Olympic twist to this year’s Big Pledge and it promises to be a fun challenge, which will certainly have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of those taking part.

“I hope the Olympic theme will inspire many people to get involved in activities and have fun doing so. I wish everyone good luck on their virtual trip to Rio!”

Wiltshire Council cabinet member with responsibility for sport, Jonathon Seed said, “The legacy of 2012 certainly lives on strongly in Wiltshire and this year’s Big Pledge will get everyone in the Olympic spirit and be lots of fun for everyone involved.

“We want Wiltshire to be full of happy, healthy communities and campaigns such as this help encourage people to put on their trainers and get more active. Good luck to everyone taking part.”

Local canoeist Hannah Brown, who was at the launch and hopes to be part of the Rio Olympics said, “I am honoured to be supporting the Big Pledge Road to Rio.

“As part of Team GB I know it’s great to have the support of your teammates so why not get your workplace, school or community group to sign up as a team. This is a great way to get active, have fun and join in the exciting build up to the Games. So what are you waiting for? Make your pledge today and join the road to Rio!”

  • Melksham resident’s travel challenge exposes accessibility barriers

A Melksham resident with a spinal cord injury has been part of a challenge to test the accessibility of public transport.

Chris Davis, who uses a wheelchair, was one of six people with spinal cord injuries from across the UK challenged to plan and complete a journey to central London within 48 hours, using at least two forms of public transport, including trains, buses or the tube.

Each participant was required to map their own route, navigate unexpected barriers and document their experience using video diaries and a detailed scorecard to assess accessibility at every stage.

The challenge was organised by the Spinal Injuries Association, of which Chris is a volunteer. He said, “Our message is that accessible travel can be challenging but it shouldn’t put you off from trying.”

With sweeping changes to rental legislation on the horizon, one Melksham property professional is stepping forward to help local landlords understand what lies ahead.

Alistair Saunders, Director of Blueleaf Property, has been managing rental homes across Melksham and the surrounding areas for more than 15 years. Over that time, he has built a reputation for giving clear, honest advice to landlords navigating an increasingly complex lettings landscape.

Now, with the upcoming Renters’ Rights Act set to reshape the private rental sector, Alistair believes landlords need practical guidance more than ever.

“The legislation coming through will represent one of the most significant changes the industry has seen in decades,” he explains. “Many landlords are hearing bits and pieces in the media but aren’t always sure what it actually means for them and their properties.”

The Renters’ Rights Act Landlord Information Evening takes place at The Kings Arms Hotel, Melksham, on Monday 16th March starting at 5:30pm and is a FREE to attend event.

  • Kieran Baggs returns as Melksham Town manager

Melksham Town Football Club have announced the return of former boss Kieran Baggs as First Team Manager, following the departure of Stuart Fleetwood last week.

Kieran previously led the club to promotion from the Western League back in 2018 and now returns to Melksham for a crucial end-of-season run-in. With just nine games remaining, Town currently sit 19th in the Southern League, in one of the relegation places, following a 3–2 home defeat to Brixham last weekend.

Kieran joins from Paulton Rovers who currently lie fourth in the Western League Premier Division, and will be joined by assistant manager Jamie Lyons and his backroom staff.

Speaking to Melksham News this week, Club Chairman Adam Young said Kieran had already had a big impact around the club. “His ability as a coach, as a manager, is exactly what we need at this stage of the season. We’ve got nine games left, 27 points to play for and I’m confident he can help us find the wins we need to stay in the Southern League.”

  • Love Melksham – A resident’s love letters to her town

A column celebrating all things Melksham from local resident Miriam Zaccarelli

Of all the travels and adventures I’ve had in my life, I always come back to where my heart feels happy and at home, in Melksham.

Our friendly and vibrant little town is full of incredible people and places and so many ways to feel enriched, connected, joyful and inspired. I will be celebrating Melksham with a little love letter every edition, highlighting something wonderful that makes me Love Melksham.

This week – because I actually took part! – features the remarkable Melksham parkrun. It is such a gift to Melksham that a team of enthusiastic volunteers show up every week in all weathers to make the event possible. It’s a free friendly 5k event, starting in King George Playing Field at 9am every Saturday, and everyone is welcome to run, jog or walk along with around 150 others. Volunteers and spectators are also always welcome! The route is currently gorgeous with cherry blossom and spring flowers and includes a beautiful stretch along the river and up to Murray Walk. Encouraged by cheerful marshals, lots of safety measures and a simple method of timekeeping, you can race up front with the super athletic runners or walk and chat leisurely with the friendly Tail Walkers at your own pace.
