Sat. 13th Aug. Southern League Division One. Melksham Town 1 Exmouth 3. Att: 442
MELKSHAM Town had a less than perfect start to the season following a narrow defeat to Exmouth Town last weekend, but Town manager, Rich Fey, says he was still impressed with his team’s performance and there were plenty of positives for the season ahead.
Speaking to the Melksham News after the game, Rich said, “We dominated completely throughout the 90 minutes, but three cheap mistakes gave Exmouth something to hold on to, so fair play to them for taking those chances. I thought the boys were excellent; it’s the first time I’ve lost a game and still been really impressed with the performance!
“We had 18 chances with 10 on target and yet somehow, we only scored the one. It just goes to show that it is that end of the pitch that we need to improve on but even so, I couldn’t fault the lads; they did everything right but finish their chances.
“Exmouth had about five shots on goal, and they scored three, so I felt gutted for the lads as it wasn’t what they deserved. It was a smash and grab, that’s for sure. They made it hard for us with time wasting and sitting behind the ball, but that’s just the game sometimes.
“I can’t blame the defence either, it was just genuinely three mistakes that they capitalised on. It’s a sign of how good a side we are that we can create so many chances – we just need to finish them.
“We’ll dust ourselves down quickly because we’ve got two really tough games coming up against two of the favourites in Sholing and Totten – both away and they don’t come tougher than that.”
