HORSE riders from Melksham and Seend took part in an awareness ride this month, urging road users to ‘Pass Wide and Slow’, following the death of local horse rider Jayne Hunt in July.
The ride was part of a national Pass Wide and Slow campaign encouraging road users to slow down their vehicles and give horses enough room when overtaking them. It took place on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17h September.
“We are all friends and we are doing this in memory of our friend Jayne Hunt who was tragically killed on the side of the road in Seend,” says one of the riders at the event, “I think the message of taking care has gotten across to people, they were very good on the roads today. We held a lot of traffic up sadly but it gets the point across. We did four and a half miles, so I think people were aware!”
Cllr Jack Oatley who was supporting the event said, “We would like to thank road users for their cooperation and understanding. This was a campaign to raise awareness and ensure horse riders get home safely.”
Jayne Hunt was a key figure in the local equine community and a co-founder of an equine podiatry training company, which delivered training and qualifications for other practitioners.
