Free parking for Blue Badge holders could return to Wiltshire Council-run car parks under plans by the ruling Liberal Democrat administration.
Melksham Councillor Jon Hubbard, an Independent councillor and member of the cabinet, has backed the move which aims to reverse the scheme ended by the previous Conservative-led council in 2022.
The cost of reinstating free parking is estimated at around £40,000 per year.
Cllr Hubbard said, “I’m delighted to support the proposal to restore free parking for Blue Badge holders in Wiltshire. This is fundamentally about ensuring our most vulnerable residents can access essential services, shops and community facilities without facing additional financial barriers.
“When Blue Badge holders can’t afford parking charges, they’re often forced to take risks by parking on double yellow lines or in inappropriate places, which creates problems for everyone. Blue Badge holders frequently have no choice but to drive due to mobility challenges, and charging them for parking creates an unfair penalty for their disability.
“Reversing this cut demonstrates that we value inclusivity and accessibility in our communities, whilst also reducing dangerous and illegal parking. It’s a relatively small cost to the council but makes an enormous difference to the daily lives of disabled residents and their families. This is exactly the kind of policy that shows we’re listening to our constituents and prioritising what truly matters.”
The proposal is due to be voted on by full council in October.
