Popular Melksham doctor retires after long-standing service

A popular doctor at Spa Medical Centre retired last month after working at the surgery for nearly 28 years.

Dr. David Thomas was a senior partner at Spa Medical Centre before he retired last month.

He qualified as a doctor in 1990 and then started working at the surgery in 1997. Colleagues organised a retirement party for him to celebrate his many years of service.

  • Children’s cancer fundraiser launched after Melksham girl’s diagnosis A Melksham mum has launched a fundraising campaign to support children with cancer after her eight-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of the disease. Clare Beck started the campaign after her daughter, Gracie-Jianne, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in October. “After months of stomach aches and numerous doctor visits, we finally got the diagnosis in October that she had a tumour in her stomach,” said Clare. “Since then, she has endured major surgery, multiple scans, and chemotherapy, leaving her feeling isolated and overwhelmed. Gracie has shown incredible strength, but she misses her friends and the joys of childhood.” Determined to turn their experience into something positive, Clare is aiming to raise £2,000 for children’s cancer charities and the Rainbow Trust, which provides emotional and practical support to families of children with life-limiting illnesses.   • A350 confirmed as key route: investment promise or traffic nightmare? After years of debate, the A350, which runs through Melksham, has been confirmed as the preferred route for traffic between the M4 and the south coast. But questions remain about what this decision means for the town. The findings were published in National Highways’ M4 to Dorset Coast Connectivity Strategic Study, which was delayed from summer 2024. Wiltshire Council has welcomed the study, highlighting its potential to secure major road investment. The council has long prioritised improving north-south connectivity along the A350, with a proposed Melksham bypass remaining a key element of its transport strategy. However, local opinion is divided. Some welcome the prospect of investment in the road network, while others fear that if the funding does not materialise, congestion will worsen significantly.   • Town’s champions honoured with Civic Awards Individuals and groups in Melksham who have made a significant contribution to the community were honoured at the Mayor’s Reception on Friday 21st March. The Melksham Civic Awards were presented by Mayor Tom Price at the reception evening, held in a packed-out Assembly Hall. The six award recipients were: Warren Fox, who received the Pride of Youth Award for his volunteering with the young carers service; Richard Clark, named Community Champion of the Year for his 13 years of service with Melksham & District Link; Scott Simmons, honoured as Community Sports Champion of the Year for his work with women’s and girls’ rugby; Melksham Amateur Swimming Club, awarded Sports Club of the Year for their commitment to nurturing young swimmers; Roc and Floss, named Business of the Year for its dedication to the local community; and Doubles, which received the Special Business Through Adversity Award for its resilience in recovering from fire and flood setbacks.   • Melksham Times Past A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis The struggles of Sarah Colbourne Lundgren This continues the narrative from the last issue, which focused on Carl Peter Lundgren, who’d committed perjury at the famous Tichborne trial. We next follow on with Lundgren’s wife and what happened next. Sarah Colbourne came from a hard-working family; the men in the family followed the same profession for several generations: plasterer, tiler, decorator, etc. Even though she left school before the age of 16 to earn money as a dressmaker, she did read and write and was educated. The family lived in Coburg Square, which was later demolished to make way for the King Street car park. It wasn’t the worst part of town, but it wasn’t the best either.   • Small rise in crime at Melksham Station New data has revealed the number of crimes reported at train stations across the UK, showing a small increase in the already low figures reported at Melksham Station. Melksham Station, which has services to Westbury and Swindon, has seen a slight rise in its already low crime figures. There were four crime reports to the British Transport Police (BTP) between 2024-2025 compared to one crime reported in the 2023-2024 period. This means the rate of all crime incidents per 100,000 passengers has increased from 3.3 to 13.18, although authorities say it is important to view this rise in a wider context. The BTP emphasised that “every offence is one too many” in relation to the new statistics. A BTP spokesperson said, “The chance of becoming a victim of crime on the railway remains extremely low, and reports of high harm crime such as robbery and violence remain low at 2.2 incidents per million passenger journeys. It is important to not sensationalise these statistics and view them within their context.   • News From The Clubs Atworth History Group The Atworth History Group welcomed Phil McMullen, who gave a very interesting talk about the history of letterpress printing on Monday 3rd March. As well as telling us about the early use of letterpress printing, Phil showed us some of the tools of the trade and a couple of things that he had printed. Next month, on Monday 7th April, Dave Ecob from the Moulton Trust in Bradford-on-Avon will give a talk about Alex Moulton and the work of the Moulton Trust. We meet in Atworth Village Hall at 7.30pm. Visitors are very welcome at the modest cost of £5 for the evening, or you may wish to join for an annual subscription of £20. The Atworth museum has been closed for the winter and will reopen on Sunday 30th March, from 2pm to 4pm.   • 4.5% council tax rise approved in “cattle market” council meeting By Local Democracy Reporter Jessica Moriarty Wiltshire Council’s budget plans for 2025 - 26 have been approved by the full council, with a net general fund budget of £527.420m. The meeting lasted over seven hours and saw party leaders clash amid what was described as a “cattle market” atmosphere ahead of May’s local elections. Both proposed amendments to the Conservative budget failed to pass the vote, which means that residents should see a 4.5 per cent rise in the Wiltshire Council element of council tax. This rise is lower than previous years, something which the leader of Wiltshire Council, Cllr Richard Clewer, said has been achieved through focusing “relentlessly on prevention” and the “integrity to take difficult decisions.” He praised a “hugely successful last four years” for Wiltshire Council, whilst his cabinet listed achievements such as high ratings for adult social care, SEND, and children’s services, reductions in fly-tipping and further investments in highways. However, some members argued that the lower rise in council tax was linked to upcoming elections.   • Local resident urges government to provide path to settlement for Ukrainians living in the UK A local resident has signed a petition urging the UK government to provide a path to settlement for Ukrainian refugees currently living in the country. The petition, which has gained significant support with 34,902 signatures, calls for the government to offer Ukrainian refugees a route to permanent settlement in the UK, following their arrival after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Graham Ellis, a Melksham Town Councillor, is one of the petition’s supporters and was also a host for a Ukrainian family who arrived in Melksham. He said, “We have a quarter of a million guests from Ukraine in the UK at present and these individuals face significant uncertainty about their future. We think allowing them to settle would provide the stability needed to rebuild their lives and contribute to British society.” The Home Office has stated that, to date, the UK has offered sanctuary to over 300,000 Ukrainians and their families under one of three Ukraine schemes: the Ukraine Family Scheme, the Homes for Ukraine Scheme, and the Ukraine Extension Scheme.   • TV’s Paul Martin values rare finds at busy Melksham event Local antique expert and TV presenter Paul Martin recently hosted another free valuation day, where 50 residents brought a range of items, including a gold Fabergé fob watch and a 1910 Edwardian croquet set. The free event, held last month at ‘that meeting space’ in the Market Place, was another success for the BBC presenter, best known for hosting Flog It! “It was an incredibly busy day; I think this is the busiest we’ve had yet,” said John Firth, administrator of ‘that meeting space’. Paul, who lives in Beanacre, began his career as an antiques dealer 25 years ago with a shop on London’s Portobello Road. “Then, I shared shops and did lots of fairs,” he explained. “I’ve had several shops throughout my life and career, including one in Marlborough, and that’s when the BBC found me 30-odd years ago. I still had my shop for the first three years of doing Flog It!” Now a familiar face on shows such as Antiques Road Trip and Countryfile Diaries, Paul enjoys meeting the public at his valuation events. “I love TV—I’ve done over 2,000 shows for the BBC.
