A ROMAN coin dating back 1600 years, an 1592 silver coin from the reign of Elizabeth I and a medieval 15th century dragon head sword belt hanger were just some of the finds made by medal detectors at Bowerhill over Easter.
Over 20 members from the Spire Metal Detecting group searched recently ploughed fields between Bowerhill and the canal on Easter Sunday.
Finds included the Roman and Elizabethan coins, an 1820 silver penny, clay pipes, 17th century tokens, a Tudor dress hook fastener and an 1837 penny.
“It’s been a great day with some really interesting finds,” said ‘Silver Boy Detecting’. “These fields have been searched before but new things are always uncovered when fields are ploughed. You never know what you are going to find. It always gives you a buzz when you uncover something that hasn’t been seen for hundreds, sometimes thousands of years.”
