RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch results in Wiltshire show milder winter helps small garden birds

THE latest results from the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch have revealed smaller birds such as long-tailed tits, wrens and coal tits were seen in greater numbers than in 2019, thanks to the milder winter.

Now in its 41st year, the Big Garden Birdwatch is a chance for people of all ages to count the number of birds that visit their garden helping the RSPB build up a picture of how they are doing. This year, almost half a million people across the country including 8,398 in Wiltshire took part counting nearly 8 million birds.

The event held over the last weekend in January revealed the house sparrow was in the number one spot in the UK, whilst there was an increase in garden sightings of long-tailed tits, wrens, and coal tits, three of the smallest species to visit our gardens. The milder weather we experienced at the start of the year appears to have helped populations of these species as small birds are more susceptible to spells of cold weather.

Over its four decades, Big Garden Birdwatch has highlighted the winners and losers in the garden bird world. It was first to alert the RSPB to the decline in song thrush numbers. This species was a firm fixture in the top 10 in 1979. By 2009, its numbers were less than half those recorded in 1979, it came in at 20th in the rankings this year, seen in just 9% of gardens.

Daniel Hayhow, RSPB Conservation Scientist, said: “Small birds suffer during long, cold winters but the warmer January weather this year appears to have given species such as the wren and long-tailed tit a boost. Over the survey’s lifetime, we’ve seen the increasing good fortunes of birds such as the coal tit and goldfinch and the alarming declines of the house sparrow and starling. But there appears to be good news for one of these birds. While the overall decline in house sparrow numbers, reported by participants, since the Big Garden Birdwatch began is 53% (1979 – 2020), in the most recent decade (2010-2020) numbers appear to have increased by 10%. Giving us hope that at least a partial recovery may be happening.”

The house sparrow was at the top of the Wiltshire Big Garden Birdwatch rankings at the most commonly seen garden birds in the county. Blue tit was in the second spot, with the starling completing the top three.

Throughout the first half of the spring term the nation’s school children took part in the RSPB’s Big Schools Birdwatch. The UK-wide survey of birds in school grounds saw close to 70,000 school children and their teachers, including 1,469 in Wiltshire, spend an hour in nature counting the birds. Blackbird was the most numerous species seen in school grounds, with an average of 5 per school; and was seen in 85% of the schools that took part.

Beccy Speight, the RSPB’s Chief Executive, said: “We know that for many people, garden birds provide an important connection to the wider world and bring enormous joy. These are difficult and unsettling times for all of us, but we hope that nature can provide a welcome respite in whichever form and wherever you may encounter it.

“Despite everything that’s going on in the world, nature is still doing its thing. Birds are singing and blossom is bursting. Watching wildlife, whether from a window or a balcony or even online, can offer many of us hope, joy and a welcome distraction, and so we are keen to help you carry on connecting with the natural world.

“Over the coming days and weeks, we will be helping people to share their wildlife encounters and provide ideas for things you can do for wildlife close to home. Follow RSPB England on Twitter and Facebook”

A man who assaulted his partner, a woman in her 30s from Melksham, has been jailed for 19 months after admitting two assaults. Billy Conners, 26, formerly of Castle Road, Salisbury, appeared at Salisbury Crown Court on 27th July after pleading guilty to two counts of assault.

He was jailed for 19 months.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said, “In April, we received a call from the victim, a woman in her 30s from Melksham, reporting that she had been assaulted by Conners on multiple occasions, with whom she had been in a relationship with for only two months.

“On 30th March, Conners assaulted the victim by biting her and spitting on her, as well as repeatedly calling her derogatory names. Two days later, Conners accused the victim of messaging other people and pushed her to the floor.

  • Melksham charity launches £50,000 appeal to replace ageing bus

A transport charity which has been supporting residents for 30 years has launched a £50,000 appeal to replace one of its ageing buses.

Melksham Area Community Transport helps elderly residents get to the shops, children travel to school and community groups attend activities, providing accessible transport for those who struggle to use conventional public transport.

The charity launched the fundraiser earlier this month after one of its buses, which is 20 years old, reached the end of its working life.

With a fleet of six buses, the charity runs shopper buses taking residents to Devizes, Trowbridge and Chippenham on certain days, provides transport for schools, care homes, social clubs and community organisations, and operates daily school buses.

  • Play cafe thrives in heart of Melksham

An interactive play cafe in Melksham is celebrating its first six months after creating a popular space for children and parents to learn through play.

Mighty Minis Play Cafe, at Avonside, features themed role-play zones including a medical centre, theatre, construction area and salon.

It was created by three local mums – Sarah Hodges, Lisa Hargreaves and Ali Turrell – who saw a gap in Melksham for alternative facilities for children and parents.

Since opening in December, co-director Ali said there has been a real “community feel” about the space, with new children and parents continuing to visit alongside regulars who attend every week.

“Everyone has been really positive and really responsive,” said Ali. “There was clearly a need for it, which is lovely. It was something that we wanted to do for a long time.”

The venue, in the Market Place, has hosted events since opening in 1847 and has previously welcomed major acts including Status Quo and Thin Lizzy.

  • Booking system to launch at Melksham recycling centre

Visitors to the Household Recycling Centre in Bowerhill will need to book appointments from September as part of a pilot scheme being introduced by Wiltshire Council.

The system is being piloted at six HRCs in Wiltshire to help reduce queuing, improve the customer experience and minimise disruption for nearby communities and businesses.

Residents will be able to make bookings from 8th September with visits by appointment only beginning on 14th September. Residents will initially be able to book a 30-minute slot up to one week in advance, with some same-day appointments available.

Wiltshire Council says the length of slots will be regularly reviewed to ensure there is maximum capacity available at sites.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Council said, “The new system is designed to make visits more convenient by helping to manage demand and reduce waiting times, particularly during busy periods.
