The car park and lighting at Melksham Community Hospital could be upgraded to improve safety for pedestrians and patients.
An application by NHS Property Services has been submitted to Wiltshire Council to reconfigure and resurface the designated car parking area outside the hospital on Spa Road, along with the installation of new lighting.
The proposed reconfiguration includes 28 parking spaces, including five accessible spaces, one ambulance bay and two pull-in bays. The plans also include a new grassed area, the installation of 11 external lighting columns and the replacement of three existing lighting columns.
The revised layout would also create a dedicated pedestrian route linking all parking spaces and providing a safer pathway for people accessing the hospital.
In the planning statement, it says the current conditions at the site “hinder safe access and the efficient flow of traffic across the wider hospital site”.
The statement adds, “The site currently experiences constrained vehicular access and frequent use of informal parking arrangements which have raised safety concerns, particularly regarding pedestrian and patient access, as well as emergency vehicle movement. The proposed works aim to support the safe, effective and efficient operation of the hospital, minimising disruption to patients and services.”
The plans have been supported by Melksham Town Council and are expected to be decided by Wiltshire Council by 22nd January.
