Save Melksham’s Post Office: Public meeting called

A PUBLIC meeting in Melksham next week is being held to fight plans to close Melksham Post Office.

The meeting at Melksham Assembly Hall on Wednesday 21st August at 6.30pm aims to raise awareness of the threat to local jobs and services and give members of the community the opportunity to question speakers from the CWU and the Post Office.

Eight local jobs are at risk as the Post Office plans to close Melksham Crown Office and relocate inside another retailer. Melksham is one of 76 offices facing closure and franchising nationally.

Chris Roche, CWU territorial representative said, “Melksham Crown post office is an essential part of the local economy. It’s a valuable asset to the community and is relied upon by local residents and businesses as well as people who collect their pensions and benefits here. The staff in Melksham are well-trained and have over 80 years of experience between them which could be lost under the company’s plans to close this office and find what it calls a ‘retail partner’.

“If this post office was to close it would be a major blow to the local economy and to the services which many people rely on.

“We want these local jobs and services to be protected and that’s why we are organising this meeting on 21st August to enable the people of Melksham to give their views and express their support to keep it open. The Post Office management haven’t announced a company to take this office yet so we’re asking them to change their mind and save Melksham Crown office.”
