STAFF from River Mead School are taking part in a challenge to cycle the equivalent distance from London to Tokyo, Japan, on static exercise bikes.
The challenge has been organised to help promote the school’s learning focus for the year, ‘Happy, Healthy, Active Me’, which also ties in with the upcoming Olympic Games that will be held in Tokyo next year.
Staff from the school are competing against staff from the two other schools in the Mead Academy Trust to see which school can cycle the furthest. They have until the start of the Olympics, Friday 24th July 2020, to collectively clock up the kilometres and reach the 9,556km target.
Headteacher of River Mead, Karen Austin, explains, “For our focus on ‘Happy, Healthy, Active Me’, the staff across all three trust schools have set themselves the challenge to collectively cycle the distance from London to Tokyo, leading by example in being active and healthy cycling the 9,556km distance!
“River Mead School has had two static exercise bikes donated for the duration. Staff are hopping on before and after school, at lunchtimes and break times to try and clock up the kilometres. The challenge has been set and the competitive staff are peddling at every opportunity to be the fittest and pedal the furthest.
“It is important we encourage children to have an active, healthy lifestyle, encouraging children to exercise and be fitter. We are supporting this with before and after school clubs offering free physical activity, as well as building regular physical activity into the learning day.”
