MELKSHAM Oak School hosted ten primary schools for the annual Great Science Share for Schools event last week, encouraging pupils to make and share their own science experiments.
Pupils from Churchfields, The Manor, Aloeric, Forest and Sandridge, Seend, Bowerhill, Lacock, Shaw and Broughton Gifford primary schools visited Melksham Oak for a whole host of hands-on activities designed by the students to take part in.
They all also shared their own experiments including: ‘How dirty is our school’; trying to power a light bulb using energy from food; putting taste buds to the test; watching what happens when water is poured on to sweets, and more!
On the day there was also a surprise science show from two teachers at Melksham Oak School that looked at chemicals in action, with some providing spectacular explosions!
Lucie Finch, science teacher at Melksham Oak School said, “It went really well, the children were all so enthusiastic. We couldn’t have put this event on without the help from our year 7 and 8 volunteers. They were a complete asset to the school.”
The event was a satellite of the Great Science Share for Schools, a national campaign aimed to inspire young people to share their science learning with new audiences developed by the University of Manchester. The event was coordinated by the science leaders at the 10 Melksham schools, led by Carol Sampey, a fellow of the Primary Science Teaching Trust.
