A MAJOR project to construct a new sewer to help with flood prevention in Melksham has resumed work, closing a section of road on the outskirts of the town.
Work for the £1.4million scheme has shut part of Woodrow Road in the Melksham Forest area of the town to through traffic as Wessex Water complete construction of the sewer over a 14-week period. The work began this week on Monday 14th March.
The closure is in force between Littlejohn Avenue and Woodcombe, with vehicle access being maintained and pedestrian access remaining unaffected.
Access to Littlejohn Avenue is only available from Forest Road, while reaching Woodrow Road from Crescent Road may be restricted at certain times.
The project was paused last summer following the discovery of a previously unidentified gas main. Working collaboratively, Wessex Water and Wales & West will now install a brand new sewer and gas mains during this new phase.
A diversion, using the A3102 Sandridge Road and New Road is also in place for road users getting in and out of Melksham.
A Wessex Water spokesperson said, “We’re pleased to be able to finish this project that was unfortunately delayed last summer and is part of measures to help with flood alleviation in Melksham.
“We understand that this is major work which affects an area of the town and apologise for any inconvenience caused while we complete the work. We will be doing our best to keep this disruption to a minimum and ensuring residents’ access to their properties remains unrestricted, or provide them with alternative arrangements.’’
