TRAFFIC on Shaw Hill on the A365 will be encouraged to observe the 30mph speed limit as part of a speed indicator device scheme.
The stretch of road qualified for the scheme – which uses electronic signs that warn drivers to slow down – after Wiltshire Council carried out a traffic survey.
At a highway and streetscene committee meeting, Melksham Without parish councillor, Alan Baines, described the news as a “good start”.
It was also noted at the meeting that Wiltshire Council said that the stretch of road did not qualify for double white lines, to prevent vehicles from overtaking.
A report by Wiltshire Council’s senior traffic engineer said that double white lines were “not appropriate” in 30mph limits as they “diminish” the effectiveness of the speed limit. Double white lines would also prevent people from stopping on the highway, “and there are a number of places on the A365 where people may like to stop,” said the senior traffic engineer.
