A MELKSHAM singer/songwriter is hoping 2017 will be her year after she secured a publishing contract for her Christmas song.
Sylvia Novak is taking a step towards her dream of being a professional musician this year, as her festive song ‘You Make Me Like Christmas’ will be marketed for Christmas.
Sylvia is working with Leopard Music Group and is hoping for a winter hit, a push for her other original music, and is on the lookout for a new keyboard player and drummer to play in her live band, Aspiration Nation, in which she plays alongside Gavin P. Daniels and Jay Bradley-White.
Sylvia said, “Despite always having had a day job, and getting a law degree from the LSE, I feel that I’m a struggling musician and it’s not as romantic as it sounds! I’ve been trying for years to get a lucky break with my songwriting, but it’s hard to get attention. It’s also hard to make any money when so much music is given away for free now.
“This deal with Leopard is some real recognition from the industry which has given me a huge boost. They will help me market the song for next Christmas.”
Sylvia plays guitar and piano and her biggest influences are Kate Bush, Katie Melua, Stevie Nicks and Shania Twain; she describes her own music as country pop, and her band Aspiration Nation plays pop/rock covers. ‘You Make Me Like Christmas’ has been professionally recorded and the music video, which is on YouTube, was filmed in part at Whitehall Garden Centre.
“My dream would be for Kylie Minogue to sing it on the next Marks & Spencer advert!” Sylvia said.
“You’ve got to aim high. Music is so important and it has kept me going through some hard times. Just to feel like you’re having some success is really inspiring.”
