THE Benefice of Atworth with Shaw & Whitley are once again having a sponsored ‘Bible Reading’ to raise much-needed funds.
Lynne Spencer, churchwarden of St Michael’s Atworth said, “Last year we read the four gospels and now intend to continue our reading of the New Testament. On Saturday 23rd October we will be reading from 9.00am-5.00pm in Christ Church, Shaw, and people are welcome to pop in for a short spell if they wish.
“Sponsorship will come mainly from the congregations of Christ Church, Shaw and St Michael’s, Atworth, but if people wish to support us then they can phone 01225 707161 to obtain details. The sponsorship is for the group of readers and not for an individual person. We will be having many readers, each reading for either a quarter or half an hour between 9.00am and 5.00pm.
“The upkeep of a church, especially a listed building, is expensive and because of the pandemic, with the necessary restrictions, we have had a reduction in income, so we have had to think imaginatively as to how we can raise income and hopefully also our profile. It must be remembered that our churches belong to the whole community and deserve our best endeavours to keep them in tip top condition for now and for future generations.
“Reading the Gospels last year went extremely well and so we are hoping for an equally good response this year.”
