ATWORTH History Group has been delving into the history of the local area, and have interesting talks lined up.
The group says, “In April the group enjoyed an excellent talk given by Nick Lennard who is treasurer of the Bath Postal Museum. He started by looking at the origins of writing, which eventually led to the need for a postal service.
“The main part of Nick’s talk covered the remarkable life of Ralph Allen who became postmaster of Bath at the age of 19, and who subsequently took over the contracts for the mail system covering most of England. He then bought local stone mines from his postal profits, and supplied much of the stone used in the redevelopment of Bath.
“On Monday 9th May we will welcome Kenneth Spencer, a local computer expert and author, who will talk to us about the history of computing and the development of the computer.
“We meet on the first Monday of the month (unless there’s a bank holiday – as there is this month, in which case it’ll be the second Monday) in Atworth Village Hall at 7.30pm. Visitors are very welcome at the modest cost of £5 for the evening, or you may wish to join for an annual subscription of £15.”
