A Melksham care home welcomed two very special four-legged visitors recently to mark Mental Health Awareness Week.
Blenheim House, part of the Berkley Care Group, hosted a visit from Happy Hooves, bringing miniature therapy horses Vino and Bryan into the heart of the home.
The pair were greeted with smiles, cuddles and plenty of carrots as residents, families and staff gathered in the garden for a memorable afternoon of connection and calm.
The visit followed a full risk assessment conducted on-site by Laura from Happy Hooves, who was more than happy for both horses to meet the residents in Blenheim House’s gardens and throughout the home.
Events manager Chris Preston said, “With the sun shining, many residents chose to sit outside, where Vino gently made her way from person to person, calmly engaging with each individual.
“Laughter, conversation and affection filled the space as the horses brought a sense of wonder and joy to the afternoon.
“Meanwhile, Bryan took a trip upstairs in the lift to visit residents who were unable to join the garden gathering. One especially touching moment came when he met a resident who used to keep racehorses and gently gave him a kiss.
“The visit was not only a highlight of the week but part of the home’s ongoing commitment to meaningful experiences that support emotional and mental wellbeing. Animal interactions have long been known to reduce anxiety, increase social interaction and evoke powerful memories and the reaction from Blenheim’s residents was proof of just that.
“Having the horses with us was truly magical. The residents were so calm and happy, it was like they forgot all their aches and pains and were simply present in that moment. It was such a joy to see.
“We’re already looking forward to welcoming Vino and Bryan back. We love creating opportunities like this that make our residents feel connected, comforted, and uplifted.”
