TOPS Hair Salon has been celebrating its 35th anniversary, and while much has changed over the years the professional service, affordable prices and great reputation remains the same today.
The popular salon at 5 High Street can offer the latest fashions and modern trends, but the friendly team are most concerned with creating a haircut to suit their customers.
Tops Hair Salon was bought by Sandra Stevens in December 1978 and quickly established itself as one of the leading salons in the area. In the early days, Tops had just two stylists but Sandra built up the business and moved to larger premises in the High Street in 1992. As business continued to expand, Sandra moved the salon to its present home in 2004, completely transforming the former Gowens store and providing a modern, fully equipped salon. Today, the salon has eight members of staff and has evolved to cater for the latest the hairdressing industry has to offer.
Sandra says, “When we first started we did washing by twin tub, music came from the record player, and appointments were done with pencil, paper and rubber. Now, we’ve got an automatic washing machine, we’ve got our ipods, the appointments are done on the computer and we even send reminder texts to our customers. We use social media to let people know what we’re doing and we get a lot of people engaging with that.
“It’s safe to say things have changed! You have to start somewhere, but then you keep evolving all the time. But we’ve still got the same high standards and excellent service and valued clients. We have clients who have been with us the whole 35 years, and in fact, I even have some who have been with me longer!”
And some of those loyal customers were among those at Tops’ drinks reception, held at the salon recently to celebrate the anniversary. Sandra was presented with a big card signed with well wishes from many of her customers. She says, “I want to say a big thank you to all our customers who have supported us over the years. Thank you to everyone who attended the party on Sunday, and thank you to the girls for my Portmerion glass vase.”
Sandra’s daughter Victoria, who also works in the salon said, “We have a focus on the hairdressing industry, and try and keep in contact with what’s going on in fashion. In 2012 we were a finalist for a ‘best local salon’ contest, and this year every competition the stylists have entered they have finished in the Top 10 in the country. But what’s most important is being able to offer the client what they want.”
