BOWERHILL’S newest development is under way as the building of furniture company Herman Miller’s new factory began last week with up to 200 new jobs being provided once the site is complete.
The factory will be built on the site of the old AFC Melksham pavilion, to consolidate the company’s manufacture and logistics buildings in Bath and Chippenham. The development will also include an extension to Portal Road which will allow access from the A350 to Bowerhill.
Cllr Fleur de Rhe-Philipe, a Wiltshire Council cabinet member for economic development said, “This investment is a major coup for Melksham and a huge economic boost for the town.
“Herman Miller has had a long association with Wiltshire and is continuing to invest in the future prosperity of the county and the skilled and committed workforce.”
The development is expected to create new jobs for locals in the short and long term.
Graham Dean, director of Herman Miller’s UK operations said, “Herman Miller, a global leader in the design and manufacture of office furniture, has had production facilities in the Wiltshire area for almost 40 years.
“We are now making a strategic investment in a new purpose-built 170,000 square foot facility in Melksham, while maintaining our existing international headquarter offices in Chippenham.
“With good transport links, a committed workforce, and supportive public sector partners, we are confident this is the right location to support our long-term presence and growth.”
