‘Use it or lose it’ Mayor asks for high street support this Christmas

WITH Christmas fast approaching, people in Melksham are being  reminded  to ‘shop local’ this Christmas, and use independent retailers in Melksham when buying your presents, cards, decorations and festive food.

Mayor of Melksham, cllr Adrienne Westbrook is encouraging people to shop locally to support the town saying, “People can’t have failed to notice that Britain’s high streets are struggling. Sadly Melksham is no different from any other market town or even large shopping centres.

“However, we have the ability as residents to change that. Shops are only viable if we use them. Melksham is full of small independent traders.  When did you last walk around the Stables,  the local antiques markets, or the Littlebrook Courtyard?

“All small traders rely on us, the residents, to keep them open. Christmas is a vital time for them. A good Christmas is often the difference between survival and closure.

“Before heading off to the bright lights of Bath or Bristol, check what these small independent Melksham traders have on offer.  A handcrafted candle, a special handmade soap, a unique piece of jewellery, there’s plenty of choice to get something truly different for the special people in your life.  Our lights are better anyway!

“The traders of Melksham will be really delighted to see you in their shops; and remember you could make all the difference to the way our local high street looks in the months to come. Shop local this Christmas and support your high street. Use it or lose it.”

Owner of independent gift shop, Ma Maison, Philip Shone said, “In this day of internet shopping it is important to remember that the small towns and villages rely on the traditional High Street retailer and they rely on the customer.

“Melksham is a town of independent retailers who depend on the local community to survive and provide a range of goods that are right on your doorstep.

“In this time of Christmas spirit, shoppers are looking for that slightly different item that the chain shops do not carry, it’s a good time to walk Melksham and discover all the great independent retailers available to Melksham. From the antique shops of King Street to the retailers of Littlebrook Courtyard, shoppers will find a variety of shops for a great shopping experience.”
