THE manager of a local supermarket is attempting to complete 28 half marathons this month to raise money for charity.
Steve Kerfoot – who works at the Co-op Food store on Cranesbill Road and is also an army veteran – is running, walking or cycling 13.1 miles every day for the month of February.
His challenge began when his employers, Co-op, in partnership with the charity Mind, encouraged all staff to “exercise more” in the month of February to help their mental health – but Steve decided to go one better!
“Because I’m ex-forces I suggested doing a half marathon every day and raise some money for Mind at the same time,” said Steve speaking to Melksham News.
Steve has set himself a fundraising target of £1,000 for Mind, and so far has raised nearly £300.
“Everyone is struggling with Covid and the lockdowns,” said Steve. “It’s been a long time – nearly a year now. So Mind seemed like a good charity to raise some money for – to help those people who are struggling. The support of Mind is more important than ever, and every penny counts. It means a lot to me to help other people.”
Because of his time in the army, Steve lives with chronic pain and arthritis in both his feet – but he refuses to let that get in the way of his challenge.
“Nothing stops me,” said Steve, “it won’t stop me. I’ll do what I need to do!
“It’s going good so far. I have had to switch between running and cycling to give my feet a break – I have got a few blisters on my feet from the last few days. But I’ll keep going.”
