WALKING footballer, Tony Norton from Whitley, has been named in the shadow team to represent England against the Republic of Ireland in the upcoming Walking Football international arranged by the IWFF in Birmingham on Sunday 23rd August.
The shadow team is for the England Walking Football community over 50s teams. Tony plays for Wilts Walking FC who are based out of Stanley Park in Chippenham. Three of their players have been selected to represent England in the match.
It is the culmination of months of hard work put in by the trio after regional trials and national final trials held last year.
The fixtures were due earlier this year but were postponed due to the Covid -19 pandemic.
Tony, who is president of Wilts Walking FC said, “It will be a very proud day for all three of us to put on the England shirt, stand on that pitch and hopefully do ourselves, Wiltshire and England proud when the whistle goes to start playing.
“We already have a Welsh international amongst us in Jeff Davies who has been part of the Welsh Walking football set up for a couple of years now.
It’s a great achievement for our club after only three years since we were officially launched.”
