Melksham, in their first home fixture, worked hard to produce a winning performance against Minety 20-5.
In the first quarter both teams traded possession in stiff competition, decisions at the breakdown influencing the game. Minety were to be first on the scoreboard with a push over try, the conversion wide of the posts. Immediately from the restart kick, Melksham hit back. The loose ball was gathered by Luke Cador running down the wing through defenders to level it.
The next home points followed from a lineout ball stolen by Steve Watson carrying strongly through traffic and beyond shipping the ball to Callum Hurn in turn fending off defenders to score the try. Ali Smith slotted the posts for the conversion to close the half 12-5.
In the second half the possession battle continued. In the visitors’ half Watson popped up with the ball, carrying hard to get over the line to ease Melksham’s tally away from the relentless visitors. The final points in the game went to the hosts with a well struck penalty from Ali Smith, final score 20-5.
Also at the home ground the Melksham III were hosts to Swindon III, defeating them 51-0. The development squad competing, but just slipping off the game at the close, losing away to Colerne 31-17.
