MELKSHAM Town had a comfortable lead early on in the game against Winterbourne United on Saturday, but manager Darren Perrin admits it was touch and go towards the end.
Melksham got back to winning ways with a 2-1 win over Winterbourne United in their third away match in a row.
Although two goals from Jack Morris and Gary Higdon put Melksham in control for most of the match, a late goal from George Brimson gave Winterbourne a boost and the visitors had to defend their win in the closing stages of the game.
Darren said, “We dominated most of the game and should have won by six or seven goals, but we were wasteful in front of the goal and didn’t take advantage of all the opportunities we had.
“We should have been able to enjoy the last moments of the game but we gave away a sloppy goal and then we were hanging on. It should have been a comfortable win, we were in control for the majority of the game but we were nearly punished.”
Darren was pleased to come away with a win and praised the players for their determination.
He said, “It was a bit shaky towards the end but credit to the lads, they kept fighting to ensure the win. It has been a difficult few weeks, especially with all the travelling. They did a great job and did what they had to do which was win.
“Availability has been an issue but things have improved. We still have one or two players who are out but numbers are a lot healthier, and already we are seeing a change in performance and results. There’s been a turn around in the last couple of games and I’m confident it will continue.”
Melksham’s next match will see them back in front of the home fans against newly-promoted Welton Rovers.
“Playing at home will be nice,” continued Darren, “especially after all the travelling we’ve done in the last few weeks. It will be a tough game though, they are a good side. We are expecting Welton Rovers to come out fighting and full of adrenaline, but we will approach the game professionally but with passion and should get a good result in front of the home fans.
“The lads are fantastic and they work so hard. They all want to play for the club and do well for the club which is great. It’s early days and, despite a few setbacks, we’ve taken seven points out of a possible nine so I’m not worried.
“I expect us to finish in a healthy position in the table. But for now we are concentrating on the coming games and on continuing a winning form.”
