A WEIGHTLIFTING world record that has stood for more than 10 years was broken this month at a local Melksham gym by 12-year old Charlie Dawe.
Charlie, who is from Steeple Ashton, completed a deadlift of a whopping 140.5KG (22st 1lbs) at CrossFit Civitas in Melksham on Sunday morning (11th July).
He beat the previous record for a deadlift by an under 13-year old, which was held by Kyle Kane from Coventry who lifted an impressive 139.7KG in July 2010.
Charlie said, “It’s an amazing feeling to break the record. I read about Kyle last year when we were in lockdown and I set myself the goal of trying to break it before I was 13, so today was really great. I’m inspired by Eddie Hall who was the world’s strongest man and was the first man to lift 500kg in 2016.”
Charlie enjoys all sports, but rugby is his favourite and his incredible strength comes in handy as a prop for Corsham U13s. He hopes that one day he will play rugby professionally, and is looking forward to being able to watch Bath Rugby next season.
Charlie’s personal trainer, Kirk Warr, said, “Charlie is incredibly dedicated and has worked so hard to get to this standard. The sky is the limit for him now.”
Charlie trains three times a week with his PT and once a week at the CrossFit Civitas gym, he also trains with his rugby club twice a week.
