Three young players from Melksham Bowls Club were selected for the Wiltshire under-25 White Rose team that made it to the quarter finals of the County Triples last month.
Alfie Holland who is 14 years old, Jack Crowder, 22, and Josh Hall, 24, were selected to play in the team which is made up of the top eight men under 25 years old in the county.
They lost out to a very strong and experienced triple from Royal Wootten Bassett in the quarter finals.
Club treasurer Danny Holland said, “Frustratingly, bowls is only viewed as a sport for retirement, when most elite players across the world are in their 30s, juggling successful careers and young families. Here in Melksham at Avon Bowls Club, the youngsters are proving this and are playing consistently at a high county level. Alfie Holland, Jack Crowder and Josh Hall reached the quarter finals of the County Triples earlier this month only narrowly losing out to a very strong and experienced triple.
“Alfie Holland was also selected to play in the Middleton Cup for Wiltshire as part of the top 24 men bowlers in the county, which is the highest competitive game in every county.
“We also have Georgie Newman who at 23 has plays at the top level for the ladies and has represented the county at the National Finals in Leamington both as an individual and in the county team.”
With a new generation of bowlers, the kit has also modernised. Danny said, “Gone are the days of long skirts, gloves, brown shoes and plain white outfits, with clubs and counties up and down the country embracing the new tide of striking kit. Avon Bowls Club is not alone in this and have a modern uniform.
“Avon Bowls Club is a thriving club with aged from 14 to 90 and is situated in a lovely quiet setting in the centre of Melksham, next to Melksham House where the campus is. “The club also holds many social events throughout the year and has its own bar and catering facilities. There are different types of membership and new members are always welcomed. Coaching and support is available as well as the bowls itself.
