WANTING to help clean up the local environment, eight-year old Mya Babbage embarked on her own litter pick last week.
With the support of her mother, Natasha Babbage, Mya – who attends Aloeric Primary School – collected rubbish around the Woody play area, near Queensway. And the pair are hoping that Mya’s efforts will inspire others to bin their rubbish and pick up any that they come across.
“My daughter Mya always wants to help the environment,” said Mya’s mother Natasha, “and any time she sees litter she wants to pick it up.
“We went for a walk with a bag and she collected as much as she could until the bag was full. We saw many people on the walk – all were smiling at her proudly with many coming over and saying ‘well done’ and how it’s helping to make the community a better place.
“Each thing she picked up she was explaining why it’s bad, and how the animals could have eaten it etc. I hope that with people seeing her do this it will encourage them to stop dropping litter and to pick up any that they see. We could learn a lot from children.”
The mother and daughter pair also want to see more bins in the Woody play area.
“We noticed a lack of bins on our route,” said Natasha. “Mya wants to make signs and put bins up as she noticed there weren’t many around. More bin less mess!”
