As one season closed another began, and so it was with Avon Bowls Club whose last outdoor game of the 2016 season on Sunday 25th September saw the ladies play the gentlemen and sadly, once again it was the boys who were triumphant. However, never fear gentlemen, the ladies will be up for another attempt next year!
At the end of the match (played in a warm and friendly atmosphere) the Competitions Secretary, Marcia Hartley invited the club captains, Sue and Peter Renshaw to present the trophies which had been up for grabs during the season with the winners receiving heartfelt applause from the watching members. Congratulations to all the successful players and better luck next time to the runners-up.
There followed a sumptuous tea, the bar was open, even the weather was kind and as the day drew to a close members were reminded of the varied Social Programme arranged by the Management Committee to keep us on our toes throughout the winter.
This first event, supported by a large number of members was a Fish & Chip Supper plus pub games on 5th October. The success of this augured well as the forerunner of things to come, such as the ever-popular Quiz Night on 12th November, and of course, Christmas Lunch is a must. Early in 2017 there will be Bingo – ‘House’, A Spanish Evening – ‘Ole’ and in March the Social Calendar will be completed by a St. Patrick’s Night Celebration – ‘Begorrah’!
At the time of going to press the members will have appointed a new committee, captains and other club officials ready for the start of the outdoor season in April, during which there will be an open day to which Melksham people who have never attempted Bowls will be invited to the club to give it a whirl, so please watch this space for details.
If anyone would like to know more about either playing Bowls next year or joining the club as a social member now, further information can be obtained by calling 01225 700 782. Club members will also be delighted to talk to visitors to the Christmas Fair in the Assembly Hall on 3rd December,
Meanwhile, the Club sends best wishes for the approaching festive season to all fellow bowlers and looks forward to welcoming you in 2017.
