Broughton Gifford Bowls Club was founded in 1961 and is situated in the village at the back of The Bell on the Common public house.
The green and surrounding area has changed little since the club’s formation and remains an unspoilt rural scene. The view overlooking the attractive dry stone wall to the rear of the Bell is one of peace and tranquillity. Visitors often comment on the lovely setting and of having the feeling of stepping back in time. The club has a membership of forty ladies and gentlemen which include local residents whilst many more have joined the club from nearby towns and villages.
The men compete successfully in both the Three Rink Wiltshire League and the Mid Wilts Triples League whilst the ladies take part in the Nor-West League.
Weekly mixed friendly matches are a feature of our fixture list which gives newcomers an opportunity to learn about tactics and the finer points of the game. Our four new members have very much enjoyed these games since joining the club.
A Wednesday evening mixed friendly was recently played at Trowbridge Town. The green bowled surprisingly well with a nice pace despite the earlier heavy rain which had saturated the playing surface.
Included in the Broughton team were two newcomers playing in their first game, whilst another two played for only the second and fifth time. A close match which everybody thoroughly enjoyed ended 45-41 in favour of the home team. The return match later this month is eagerly awaited by both sets of players.
In a Mid Wilts League match the next evening Broughton returned to winning ways following a disappointing narrow defeat the previous week. Second placed Broughton visited third placed Spencer’s which resulted in a seven shot and 9-5 points win for the visitors.
There was another fine performance from the ladies on Wednesday 5th July when third placed Nor-West League side Broughton overcame second in the table Blue Circle to gain an emphatic 41 -30 shots and 6-0 points victory. Team and scores; Heather Davis, Margery Mandryko & Sylvia Davis 18-16; Gwenda Kelley (capt), Margaret Bourne & Nicole Palmer 23-14. This result moves Broughton up to second place below leaders Winsley, where the two teams are due to meet in their next fixture.
