A community hall in the heart of the town is running more events and activities for all age groups, from cookery courses to fundraising nights.
At the end of last year, The Riverside Centre hosted a ‘Help you Cook’ course aimed at men who were on their own but had previously relied on their partners to do the cooking.
“The course was very successful and turned into a lovely social event, eating together at the end of each session,” says the centre’s chair Chris Pickett. “This has now resulted in a further opportunity to other gentlemen to join the small group, to learn some basic cookery skills and provide themselves with economical home-cooked food.”
The course started on 7th February and will run on the second Friday of each month. The next session will be held on Friday 14th March. It runs from 10am until 2pm and all the food and utensils are provided. A small cost of £6 will be charged to cover the hall rental.
The centre is also holding fundraising events with the next one being a ‘Music Nite’ on Friday 21st February at 7.30pm. “Local musicians can play in an open mic format,” explained Chris. “The fact that you may not play an instrument does not exclude you for the fun of hearing others. Maybe you would like to sing and recite poetry, or just have a good evening out with friends. There will be a licensed bar and soft drinks available, as well as some nibbles. This will cost £3, where else could you get such a bargain?”
Chris says if the event is successful, it will be repeated bi-monthly.
